Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated this race as safely Republican. Incumbent Doug LaMalfa (R) defeated Jim Reed (D) in the general election on November 8, 2016. LaMalfa and Reed defeated Gregory Cheadle (R), Joe Montes (R), Gary Allen Oxley (R), David Peterson (D), and Jeffrey Gerlach (Independent) in the top-two primary on June 7, 2016.[4][5]
