Campaign themes

2009

Hastie's campaign website listed the following campaign themes for 2009:

I am running for Board of Education because I believe every child should have a voice, a voice that sings their praises and a voice that guides their actions. The current board is doing a very good job of providing opportunity for all. Per pupil spending in our district is among the lowest in the Westchester/Putnam region, while our performance is among the highest.

Every school in our district passed the Annual Yearly Performance (AYP) review as administered by the state. We have an outstanding sports program and participation in our extra-curricular activities is very high. But we can’t stop here. Excellence is a journey not a destination. I want to keep us on that path.

While on the board, I will accomplish the following:

Managing Your Dollars is the most important responsibility of the board. The board should be held accountable for how wisely it spends your dollars. I will make sure that the dollars we spend are focused on improving student performance.

Studies show that Involving Parents in children’s education improves student results. Engaging our parents will be a top priority of mine.

Better Outreach to our community. The district needs to communicate more effectively (and more often) about what’s going on in the schools. ConnectEd (the telephone calling system) is a step in the right direction.

Insuring the district is Going Green. The district has made significant strides in cutting our electricity and fuel costs. Not only is operating in an eco-friendly manner good for the environment, it saves money. We must improve in this area.[6]
