Three of the nine seats on the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District school board were up for at-large general election on April 5, 2016. In their bids for re-election, incumbents Jeffrey Sikich and Patricia Ulwelling faced challengers Heather Justham and William Ustruck.[1] Sikich won another term on the board, but Ulwelling received the fourth-most votes and lost the election. Justham and Ustruck were both elected to the board.[2]

The term of incumbent Susan Stalewski was also on the ballot, but she did not file to run for re-election, which left it open for a newcomer. Both Justham and Ustruck previously ran for a seat in 2015. They ran as write-in candidates.[1]

Campaign themes

2016

The West Allis Now asked the candidates in this race the following four bolded questions. Sikich's responses are shown below.

Why should people vote for you? What background, skills, outlooks do you bring to the table?

I have spent most of my life in education, either as a student or a teacher. I bring a different perspective to the board. I would like to continue to be part of a team that works to uphold high educational standards and positive experiences.

How do you feel about the new transfer policy and school boundaries?

I believe that strong communities need strong neighborhood schools for increased student performance and parental involvement.

Do you feel the school board is on the right track or would you like to see a change?

We are definitely headed in the right direction. We have made strides. We still have a lot of work to do and I would enjoy continuing to be a part of the planning and implementation of our district goals.

What are your feelings about Next Generation personalized learning?

Students learn differently. That's why personalized learning is so important. NXGL is a tool that can be utilized in personal learning. I believe we should offer NXGL in all of our WAWM schools.[7]
