Firstly, integrity is paramount. An elected official must possess an unwavering commitment to truthfulness, as their role is to represent the interests of the people rather than outside developers or special interests. This ties directly into transparency; constituents deserve clear communication about decision-making processes and the motivations behind policy choices. Equally important is a sense of responsibility to the community. This includes listening to the community's voices and actively engaging with them, fostering an environment where public discourse is encouraged and valued. Empathy is crucial here; understanding the lived experiences of constituents allows officials to make informed decisions that truly reflect the needs of the people. Critical thinking is essential. An elected official should not merely accept the status quo but question existing structures and advocate for progressive changes that promote social justice and equity. This requires a commitment to public service, where the focus is on the common good rather than personal or political gain.

Finally, the principle of collaboration must be considered. An effective leader recognizes that real change requires partnerships across diverse sectors of society. Engaging with various stakeholders—including marginalized voices—ensures a more holistic approach to governance.
Council members represent the interests and concerns of their constituents. They must listen to community members, understand their needs, and advocate for policies that reflect those needs. These electeds play a crucial role in reviewing, amending, and approving the city’s budget, ensuring that public funds are allocated effectively to meet community needs. We have a responsibility to promote and facilitate community engagement in local governance. This includes hosting town hall meetings, forums, and workshops to gather input from residents. As a council member it is my job to make decisions regarding land use, zoning, and development projects, balancing community growth with environmental sustainability and quality of life. Additionally, we have a responsibility to create an environment that is conducive to business development and job creation. Finally, as an elected I must advocate for state and federal funding and other resources that can benefit the community, addressing issues such as infrastructure, housing, and public services.
My first job was as a barista at the Olive Avenue Market when I was a junior in High School. I worked there on and off throughout college. It was my first dip into the importance of supporting small/local businesses, the joy of community, and the ways that residents of a city show up to help out one another.
Council members must have familiarity with municipal laws, regulations, and governance structures. This is essential for making informed decisions and crafting effective policies. They must be able to analyze policies, assess their potential impacts, and evaluate outcomes to make data-driven decisions. I have skills in financial planning and budgeting, which are critical for overseeing city finances and ensuring responsible allocation of public funds. It is helpful to know how to secure funding from state and federal sources and grants and donations, which can help support community projects. As a therapist, I see the importance of strong verbal communication skills for articulating ideas, presenting policies, and engaging with the community during meetings and events. This includes listening to constituents and understanding their concerns, which fosters trust and ensures that their voices are heard. Council members often navigate disagreements among constituents, stakeholders, or fellow council members. Negotiation and conflict resolution skills are vital for finding common ground and reaching consensus.
