What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
“ | 1) Fast-track transition to solar |
” |
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?
“ | As a scientist, I value reason and logic in decision-making. Scientific experts tell us that Florida is facing a bleak future if we don't make better environmental choices. We must stop polluting our air and water to leave a habitable state for our children. This will help protect Florida's economy, which is intimately tied to a healthy environment. Transitioning to solar will not only decrease air pollution, but add jobs in Florida, while decreasing consumer energy costs. In addition, I believe we've begun making strides in addressing gun violence. I'd like to build on that progress by enforcing universal background checks and banning the sale of military-style assault weapons.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]

“ | What is your political philosophy?
As a scientist, mother, and Christian, I am deeply concerned about the future health and safety of our planet. The current state legislature has failed in many respects. Instead of working to solve serious problems of natural resource management and development, we continue to foul the water and air, while ignoring the impact on vulnerable citizens and Florida's wildlife. Our fragile environment is intimately connected to Florida's economy. Ignoring environmental issues, such as toxic algae and rising sea levels, could devastate Florida's economy. In addition, our legislature increasingly devalues public education. Millions of tax dollars are shoveled into private voucher programs and charter schools, with little to no financial or educational accountability. This wastes tax dollars, hurts public schools, and, most importantly, does not provide for the educated, scientifically-literate future citizens we need. I'm ready to roll up my sleeves and work across the aisles to solve big problems. We must transition to solar energy, sooner rather than later. We must protect our drinking water from fracking. We must restore the health and ecosystems of the Everglades, the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchie Rivers, and estuaries. We must fully fund robust public education. We must care for vulnerable seniors and low-income workers by freeing affordable housing trust funds at the state level, and expanding Medicaid. We must protect our citizens from gun violence by enforcing universal background checks, banning the sale of military style assault weapons, and high capacity magazines. We must NOT pretend these problems will solve themselves. It is incumbent upon all of us to envision the future we want for our children, and work as hard as possible to make that a reality before it's too late.[4] |
