Jen Douglas is a lifelong Rhode Islander and Charlestown resident of 15 years. She is the Town Committee Rep of the RI Democratic Women’s Caucus, a member of the Charlestown Democratic Town Committee, and currently running for State Senate in District 34. As a single parent of two teenagers and a full time health care worker, she understands the needs of families: good schools, a living wage, access to health care, and strong environmental programs to protect our natural resources.
  • Fair Taxation The bottom 20% of Rhode Islanders pay a higher proportion of their income in state and local taxes than the top 1%. That’s wrong. It’s time that corporations and the wealthy pay their fair share.
  • Reproductive Freedom: Abortion and contraception are private medical decisions between a patient and their doctor, not for legislators. I will always defend and protect reproductive rights.
  • Quality Public Education Every child has the right to a quality education, no matter the ZIP code they were born in. We’ll increase school funding to fix our broken education system that leaves so many children in Rhode Island behind.

Jen Douglas is a lifelong Rhode Islander and Charlestown resident of 15 years. She is the town committee rep of the RI Democratic Women's Caucus, a member of the Charlestown Democratic Town Committee, and current democrat candidate for State Senate in District 34.

As a single parent to two teenagers and a full time health care worker, she understands the needs of families: good schools, a living wage, access to health care, and strong environmental programs to protect our natural resources.

I'm especially passionate about public health and supporting wellness initiatives for our communities. In that sense, it is remarkable how interconnected all policy is in regards to health.

Providing a living wage coupled with affordable housing provides security for families and individuals. The Covid pandemic has highlighted this need as we are currently facing an eviction crisis and the exploitation of our essential workers who are earning far less than their worth.

Combating environmental racism, which sites unhealthy and environmentally unsound businesses in lower income areas is also important. Children who live in these zones tend to have higher rates of asthma and other respiratory disorders. This is unacceptable and we need to do better and work on green energy initiatives which will reduce emissions, improve air quality, and provide a healthier environment for us all, but especially for residents in these marginalized communities.

Having a safe, clean, schools and providing free, healthy lunches to students improves learning and educational outcomes. It is so important that we have well funded schools for our students because their potential is directly tied to their environment. Hungry, distracted children can't learn. It is up to us to provide them with every opportunity possible.

I would also like to see more investment in Health Equity Zones to provide area residents with the support they need to live and work in a healthy community.
I'm thoughtful, compassionate and willing to take bold action to advocate for my community instead of just going along with the status quo
I believe the core responsibility of an elected official is to honor the wishes of their constituents and to work hard to provide compassionate legislation that will do the most good to ensure healthy and safe communities for all.
One of the first events that really had an impact on me was the Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989, when I was 14 years old. It was the worst oil spill in US history at that point, spilling 11 million gallons of crude oil into Alaska's Prince William Sound, covering 1,300 miles of coastline. Watching the absolute destruction of the pristine waters, the deaths of thousands of otters, sea birds, and whales truly affected me. It was during that period, because of that event, that really fostered my passion and interest in environmentalism and preservation. It is that passion I hope to bring with me to the State House so we can finally pass legislation to invest in green energy and end our fossil fuel consumption by 2030.
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. It is a subtle, eerie, and poignant piece of fiction that questions what it is to be human, to face your own mortality, and what happens when science and medicine are not accompanied by ethics.
I've been singing Please Let That Be You by The Rentals, and Oh Heart by Tank and the Bangas for days.
I do not. I think it is important to have a healthy interest and basic understanding of politics in general, but our legislators don't often reflect the communities and the people they serve. I would love to see more activists, community leaders, mothers, and people of color in office. It isn't until we have a General Assembly truly reflective of and invested in their communities that we will see true change in our political systems.
Climate change and the effect it will have on our livelihoods, our health, and our fishing and tourism industries is especially important to address. And we need to invest in green energy to eliminate our consumption of fossil fuels in order to protect our state, and our waterfront communities from rising sea levels. One
Last year as we were working to codify Roe v Wade into state law, a woman spoke about her grandmother who died from an illegal abortion, many years before it was legal. She was poor, had a large family already, and was desperate because she simply could not afford another child. She left home one day for the procedure and never returned to her family, leaving her husband and babies alone. It was just so terribly sad and heart wrenching that she lost her life during what would be a simple, safe, medical procedure if it were simply legal. I think about that woman often.

Candidate Connection

Jennifer Douglas completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Douglas' responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Codifying Roe v Wade into RI law by passing the Reproductive Health Care Act. Strengthening environmental regulations on a state level to combat this administration's removal of wildlife and conservation protections. Affordable Healthcare/Medicare for all.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I'm especially concerned about the rights of women, undocumented immigrants, and underrepresented communities.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Honesty and the ability to listen to all constituents and make policies based upon the will of the people.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I care about the people in my community and want everyone to thrive. The health and safety of constituents should be any elected officials main concern.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

The primary responsibility is to speak to constituents and advocate for them and their concerns.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

No. Sometimes a fresh set of eyes or a new way of thinking is the best way to shake up the system and prevent politics as usual.
