Campaign themes

2016

Herold's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Mental Health Education/Reform:

I am an occupational therapist by trade and I have had first-hand experience working with those individuals who have some mental health issues that affect their everyday lives in many ways. It is difficult for many people to come forward and to seek the help that may assist them in living the most enjoyable and healthy life possible. We have seen many incidents locally and nationally that can be traced back to a mental health issue with someone who did not receive the help they needed. I want to be able to make it easier to get help in our state and work to reform and create programs needed to make the change that is possible.

Public/Private Partnerships: Vita-Mix, Pat Catan's, and The Cleveland Browns are just a few of the many businesses that create a huge positive economic impact in the 7th District. They also are great at giving back to the communities that they call home. I would like to push for legislation to incentivize businesses to re-invest in their communities even more, by creating public private partnerships. This would alleviate the burden on a city to fully fund additions and improvements. Our city parks and recreation departments would be the main beneficiaries, allowing them to fund additions such as splash pads and ADA approved playgrounds for example.

Funding for Local Schools: I know that due to recent policy changes at the state level, many of our locals schools have been affected by the state filtering the money from our local taxpayers to other underserved communities to enhance their schools and student populations. I am a firm advocate that this is a bigger issue than what was presented initially. It is difficult to see our local communities paying for other cities children to go to school. It is not a negative to help children to access schooling. However the money that is being filtered is taking away from our local schools and I believe that there are other ways to assist these communities than by taking from our schools to give to other schools.

Educational Standards and Common Core: From my experience working in the school systems as an occupational therapist, state testing is a standard across the board. There is a need to understand how our students do and what areas we can improve on. However I firmly believe there is an increased amount of testing, some of which does more harm than good and can take away from the actual 'learning' days. I would like to propose a review of our testing, testing standards and specifically review our Common Core standards. We need to be on the 'cutting edge' to help our students not only survive school testing, but thrive.

Caring for Our Senior Citizens I will fight to not only sustain but increase funding for programs for our senior citizens.[5]
