Biography

Jennifer Mushtaler earned a high school diploma from Clear Creek High School, a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas, Austin in 1993, and an M.D. from Southwestern Medical School in 1998. Her career experience includes working as a medical doctor.[1]

Dr. Jennifer Mushtaler is a board certified obstetrician/gynecologic surgeon and lifelong Texan. She grew up across from NASA Johnson Space Center which shaped her love of science and humanity. She earned a Bachelor of Science Cum Laude from The University of Texas and went on to earn her medical doctorate from Southwestern Parkland Hospital. She has given a life of service to Texas women and families both as a physician and as a community leader. She has served on Medicaid advisory panels, as President of her Limited District and on the City of Austin Planning Commission. She has advocated for Texans health care, infrastructure and stewardship of natural resources.
  • Dr. Jennifer Mushtaler is time tested and proven to be effective during critical moments. She is an active listener and will advocate for those who need voice.
  • Dr. Mushtaler will bring a missing voice to the Texas legislature as the only obstetrician. Her experience as a clinician, as a small-business owner and within the insurance industry makes her best qualified to tackle health care challenges in Texas.
  • Dr. Mushtaler understands how to balance operating budgets and what it means to make payroll. She also understands how to lead amongst diverse people and competing interests.

Dr. Jennifer Mushtaler is a practicing board-certified obstetrician gynecologist, an experienced small business owner, and a civic leader. She's also am a mom to two daughters, a wife to her husband of over 20 years, and daughter of a retired public-school teacher and NASA engineer. Dr. Mushtaler will be a strong advocate for District 6 and bring her experience as a successful business owner and health professional to Council. Through her civic involvement, she has learned firsthand that this district needs more effective leadership on law enforcement, homelessness, land development & zoning, and budget discipline. Dr. Jen is committed to listening to the needs of D6 and will fight for the hard-working neighborhoods in this district to ensure the health, safety, security and economic well-being of her fellow residents.
  • I oppose defunding the Austin Police Department and will explore effective budget reforms jointly with law enforcement
  • I will work to reinstate the camping ban and find collaborative, long-term solutions for homelessness
  • I will protect neighborhoods and fight for property owners' rights to protest zoning changes
As a medical doctor, I'm passionate about public health and safety, and will be guided by my medical experience and expertise to take Austin in the best direction on complex issues like the pandemic and homelessness. As successful small business owner, I'm also focused on the fiscal responsibility and professionalism needed to lead a large city.
