Paula Jones-Watson, Younass Mohamed Barkouch, and Natalia Ioffe won election to the Jersey City Public Schools school board in New Jersey on November 2, 2021. They ran on the Education Matters slate with an endorsement from the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA), meaning NJEA-backed candidates maintained a 7-2 majority on the board.
All nine members of the board are elected at large (citywide). Nine candidates ran for three seats, which were open as all three incumbents chose not to seek re-election.
Erika Baez, Doris Ervin, and Thyson Halley ran on the Change for Children slate. In previous elections, Change for Children slates were backed by the LeFrak Organization, a developer, and were critical of deficits and tax increases.[2][3] Vishesh Modi ran under the slogan Education Skills Matter. Asad Dar and Afaf Muhammad chose to run without slogans.[3]
The three incumbents who didn't seek re-election—Mussab Ali, Marilyn Roman, and Joan Terrell-Paige—were last elected in 2018 on the Education Matters slate.[4]
In 2020, the Education Matters slate won all three seats up for election. In 2019, the Education Matters slate won three seats and two members of the Change for Children slate won the other two up for election.[5]
