Jesse Gabriel (Democratic Party) is a member of the California State Assembly, representing District 46. He assumed office on December 5, 2022. His current term ends on December 7, 2026.

Gabriel (Democratic Party) ran for re-election to the California State Assembly to represent District 46. He won in the general election on November 5, 2024.

Biography

Jesse Gabriel lives in Encino, California. Gabriel graduated from Oak Park High School in 2000. Gabriel earned a B.A. in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2004, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2008. His career experience includes working as an attorney with the United States Senate in Washington, D.C., and at the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP in Los Angeles.[1][2] Gabriel served as a Los Angeles County commissioner and as a board member of the Los Angeles League of Conservation Voters and the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles.[3]

California State Assembly special election

CA House District 45

A special primary election for the position of California State Assembly District 45 was called for April 3, 2018. Jesse Gabriel (D) and Justin Clark (R), the top two vote-getters, advanced to the special general election that was held on June 5, 2018.[4][5] Gabriel won the seat.[6]

To qualify for the race, candidates had to obtain nomination documents from election officials in their county of residence by February 8, 2018. Candidates could have qualified by paying a $1,072.42 filing fee. Candidates could have also qualified by submitting petition signatures by January 9, 2018. The filing deadline for write-in candidates was March 20, 2018.[7]

The seat became vacant following Matt Dababneh's (D) resignation effective January 1, 2018, due to sexual misconduct allegations. He said the allegations against him were not true.[8]

Eight candidates—six Democrats, one Republican, and one independent—filed to run in the race.[9] Independent candidate Dennis Zine unofficially withdrew from the race in February 2018, but his name still appeared on the primary election ballot.[10]

Jesse Gabriel was first elected to the State Assembly in 2018.

In his short time in the Legislature, Gabriel has championed efforts to address California's housing and homelessness crisis, strengthen public education, fight climate change, pass commonsense gun safety measures, and protect vulnerable communities. In his first full term, Gabriel authored nine bills that were signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom, including highly regarded measures to expand access to justice and protect communities at risk of hate-motivated violence. He also has fought to protect Californians during the COVID-19 pandemic, including through measures to increase testing, provide PPE to healthcare and essential workers, and deliver emergency financial relief to struggling workers and small businesses.

Before being elected to the Legislature, Gabriel worked as a constitutional rights attorney. In 2017, Gabriel sued the Trump Administration in two landmark lawsuits to protect young people-known as Dreamers-who were promised protection under the DACA program. Gabriel also represented Holocaust survivors, victims of domestic abuse, and communities facing hate-motivated violence,

Gabriel previously served as a LA County Commissioner and as a board member of the LA League of Conservation Voters and the Jewish Federation. Gabriel lives in Encino with his wife Rachel Rosner-an affordable housing attorney-and their three sons. He is a graduate of UC Berkeley and Harvard Law School.

Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits.
