Jesse Gunn is a public school teacher and city commissioner who has worked tirelessly to address community issues such as pedestrian safety, public safety, and mental health first responders. He also fought with teachers and parents to prevent the closure of six schools. As a labor leader, he’s defended workers' rights. His extensive community organizing experience has helped him earn the trust and endorsement of over 45 elected officials, unions, and organizations across the East Bay.

As the child of teen parents, Jesse became a first-generation college graduate and now teaches math at his alma mater. He’s committed to improving services that support vulnerable communities, such as the students he teaches daily. He believes in building a strong bus network, because he has relied on public transit throughout his life.

He believes that public transit is key to building strong communities, connecting residents to schools, jobs, and services. As an AC Transit Director, Jesse will build consensus on the issues that matter to those who depend on the buses daily. His experience as a commissioner, labor leader, co-lead for the Climate Empowerment Learning Initiative, Co-Chair of his school site SBDM and on the school district's transportation committee, in addition to being a frequent transit rider has fully prepared him to tackle AC Transit's challenges on day one.
  • On-Time and Reliable Service: Our buses should reduce traffic congestion, but they can only do so if they run on time. To achieve this, we must adjust bus schedules to reflect the actual travel times between stops, ensuring buses reach their destinations as expected.
  • Dignified Working Conditions for Operators: Our bus operators are our greatest asset, and they deserve better. It’s unacceptable that they often forgo basic needs like drinking water due to a lack of restroom access. Ensuring they have adequate recovery time and restroom facilities will improve their well-being and help guarantee safe, timely service for all riders.
  • Forward-Thinking Transit Funding: AC Transit’s fiscal challenges reflect larger regional issues. We need a coordinated solution that builds partnerships with agencies like BART, MUNI, and VTA to improve the rider experience and streamline services. Jesse’s background in mathematics equips him to tackle these financial challenges, but long-term solutions require collaboration with state and federal leaders for sustainable funding that secures the future of public transit in the East Bay and throughout the region.
Jesse is passionate about ensuring that public resources effectively serve our most vulnerable communities, particularly those who rely on AC Transit for their daily transportation needs. He understands that over 150,000 people use AC Transit each day, with many low-income residents depending on it as their only means of transportation. It's critical that AC Transit not only meet the immediate needs of these riders but also ensure long-term sustainability to continue delivering reliable service.

Elected officials must genuinely represent and respond to the needs of their constituents while being committed to public service. They should be accountable stewards of public resources and work collaboratively and creatively to solve challenges.
Jesse brings skills related to problem solving, and the ability to build consensus. Teachers are accustomed to working with diverse groups, listening to all perspectives, ensuring that everyone is valued, and addressing the needs of communities. Just like students, the bell does not dismiss them from their work. Jesse is used to working long days and nights, working to advocate for the rights of students and his neighbors. He understands how policies impact people directly, particularly people in crisis, and has experience in managing limited resources effectively. His dedication to service makes him an empathetic leader who is committed to finding solutions that benefit the broader community.
Being an AC Transit director requires building consensus on critical issues that impact the daily lives of people who depend on AC Transit's bus service.
AC Transit represents a direct link between state, federal and regional funding and direct services that meet the needs of the community. This office addresses issues that affect residents' daily routines and overall quality of life. It has the ability to address and resolve issues that are unique to the community of Ward 6, using localized knowledge and strategies that only someone who has been working in the community for years can do effectively.

The number one thing that every public servant should do in their role is be transparent and accountable with public resources. It is essential to maintaining public trust. Public servants must ensure that budgets are clear, accessible and open to scrutiny. It's also important that taxpayer dollars are spent efficiently. Jesse's role as Commissioner on the Hayward Community Services Commission ensured that local and federal funds were distributed to non-profit agencies that have demonstrated sound fiscal accounting, clear results and genuine public need.
