An effort to recall Jesse Watts from his position as the Eureka County Sheriff in Nevada did not go to a vote in 2021. Recall supporters did not submit enough petition signatures by the deadline on November 1, 2021. To get the recall on the ballot, supporters would have had to submit 148 signatures.[1]
Watts was elected to the position in 2018.[1]
Recall supporters
The recall petition was filed by two Eureka County employees—Jackie Berg and Ashley Adams—and Cynthia Beutel, who is the wife of Eureka County District Attorney Ted Beutel.[1]
The recall petition said:[1]
“ | Jesse Watts spends too much of our taxpayer money. He misuses the county funds entrusted to him. Jesse Watts fails to property investigate crime. He thinks he is above the law. Jesse Watts does not want law enforcement to help people. He only helps himself. Jesse Watts is only interested in his own personal gain and his own fame. Give Jesse Watts what he deserves – to be recalled from office.[2] | ” |
Recall opponents
After the recall failed to make the ballot, Watts published a video on Facebook thanking his supporters. He also said, "I also say thank you to those who filed for the recall, because they brought up things that had never been brought forward before. Hopefully, we will come together to do a united front to fix the problems you have addressed because without unity you can’t have community."[1]
