My name is Jess Arneson and I have lived in south Fargo with my husband Jered since 2013. You may recognize me as the happy lady with flour on her apron from Red River Coffee, where Jered and I were the hands-on owners and operators for the past eight years until selling it this past summer.

Prior to supplying Fargo with homemade treats and soups, my background was in community building as a macro-level social worker for local non-profit organizations and as a community volunteer.

I have 20+ years of experience volunteering, working, and serving on the boards of organizations that make our communities strong, safe, and stable. While I live in Fargo, I have also lived many years in small, rural communities in North Dakota, and I understand the needs, strengths, and challenges that they hold. I am an advocate for EVERY North Dakotan to live their best life possible, regardless of

their age, income, or location.
  • I am running for the State Senate because I LOVE North Dakota and am dedicated to doing whatever I can to make it the best it can be for ALL of us! It is time to end the divisiveness that has taken over our political scene and bring the focus back towards accomplishing shared goals that unify us as North Dakotans.
  • I am committed to protecting the individual rights of every North Dakotan, and protecting local control of government.
  • We can - and MUST - address the ongoing widespread workforce shortages in the fields that keep our communities healthy, stable, and safe. Our hard working teachers, EMTs, Police, Fire & Rescue, nurses, care takers of disabled people, and child care providers need our help. They are critically understaffed, overworked and underpaid, many working second or third jobs and double shifts to meet their basic needs. We must take care of the people who take care of people.
I will strongly support community development projects, programs, and events that build and/or increase the intrinsic value of our communities and enrich the lives of North Dakotans of all ages and incomes, making our state a great place to work, live, and visit. I also strongly support increasing access to mental healthcare and addiction services. Mental health and addiction are widespread issues that transcend age, income, and party lines and addressing them are key to keeping our communities healthy, stable, and safe. We must improve the capacity, access, and outcomes of these vital services and ensure that they are available at appropriate levels to meet the dire needs throughout our state.
I was raised by parents and grandparents who were humble, hard working, honest, gentle, and kind. Holding these values dear provides for a life of meaning, fulfillment, and sleeping well at night!
I am resourceful, solution-driven, open-minded, and full of energy!
I believe that it is beneficial for state legislators to have previous leadership experience, in the capacity of a business or executive board.
It is not only beneficial to build relationships with other legislators, it is essential. Strong, well-rounded policy comes only from being analyzed and critiqued from every perspective possible.
My first letter from a legislator came in 1983. I was 5 years old, in Kindergarten in Mayville, ND. It was from my uncle Pete Lipsiea, who in 1976 was the youngest person to be elected into the legislature at the age of 21. Sadly he passed away from cancer when he was 30, but he left his mark, and not just with me!

My family moved away from Mayville after my kindergarten year, and returned the summer before my senior year in high school. When our family returned, so many people of all ages and backgrounds introduced themselves to me saying, “Your Uncle Peter was my best friend!” and I know that they were all telling the truth, because I felt that way too!

He was a smart, kind, hard working man who always made time to connect with people, no matter who they were. He was what a leader should be, the kind of leader that we need now more than ever, the kind of leader that I strive to be.
I believe in local control. Our communities, just like our citizens, are unique in their strengths, resources, weaknesses, and needs. Only our communities know what is best for them. The state's role is to listen to the communities and respond as appropriate in supporting communities' efforts towards being as safe, healthy, and stable as possible.
My first priority, if elected, is to listen and learn, and to seek out other moderate lawmakers to find common ground with in order to restore North Dakota's long history of strong bi-partisan leadership. Focusing on what we have in common instead of on our differences results in well-rounded moderate policy that fosters unity in our communities. The political climate of the past several years has driven us apart; it has driven apart families, friendships, and communities. It is time to come together again and focus on what we ALL care about; safe, healthy, stable communities for us and our loved ones to thrive in!
