Jessie Fuentes is a queer latina grassroots organizer, educator, and public policy advocate with over a decade of experience working in education, criminal justice reform, affordable housing, community development and sustainability.

A child of Humboldt Park and a seasoned organizer, Jessie’s lived experience overcoming poverty, violence and generational trauma, coupled with her professional accomplishments, have prepared her to serve the residents of the 26th Ward.

Jessie recently served as Director of Policy and Youth Advocacy at the Puerto Rican Cultural Center and Co-chair of a local Violence Prevention program. This past year, she led efforts to successfully preserve the culture and economic stability of the Ward by ushering through a bill that designated Humboldt Park a Cultural District.

As Alderperson she will fight to invest in public safety strategies that keep our communities safe, expand affordable housing, stop displacement of long-term residents, support small businesses, and advocate for responsible economic development.

Education - Jessie will fight to make sure parents, community, students and teachers have a voice on what happens in every school building in the 26th Ward - this means working towards a fully elected school board. Jessie will champion an equitable funding formula, and demand investment in restorative practices that humanize our young people.

Public Safety - Jessie believes that we all want neighborhoods where our children feel safe and healthy. Ensuring that we are all safe in the 26th Ward means that we must address the root causes of crime. That is why Jessie is committing to investing in our young people through culturally competent after school programs and providing living wage jobs to help bring peace to our streets. She will ensure through legislation that we are supporting funding mental health resources and reopening closed public mental health clinics. Jessie will be a champion on Treatment not Trauma.

Housing - Jessie believes that we have a real opportunity through the aldermanic office to ensure neighbors can afford to live in the 26th Ward. As an alderperson she will take on the gentrification, segregation, and displacement that is changing the face of our community. Jessie is committed to building more affordable housing, creating affordable home ownership opportunities, housing the homeless and protecting homeowners and renters from property tax increases.

The first historical event that happened in my lifetime is when I graduated with my undergraduate degree in 2013. I was the first member in my family to graduate from college and it was such a profound day, my family was so proud and emotional. A day I could never forget.
How To Do The Work by Dr. Nicole LePera. It is such an eloquent series of how to reparent your inner child, confront your historical trauma and how to heal.
I do not believe it's beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience in government, but I do I believe it is important to have someone that has organizing and community building experience. Someone who understand policy and how to legislate.
