Jessica Hertz was a staff secretary in the White House. President Joe Biden (D) announced he had selected Hertz as staff secretary on December 30, 2020.[1] The staff secretary supervises what material the president receives, including memos, bills and veto recommendations, speech drafts, and the daily briefing book.[2]

In October 2021, Hertz resigned from her position as staff secretary.[3] She was succeeded by Neera Tanden.

Biography

Hertz received an A.B. in art history and French literature from Harvard University in 2003. She then attended the University of Chicago Law School, receiving a J.D. in 2007.[4]

She began her legal career as a clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. From 2009 to 2011, she worked as a counselor to the administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs in the Office of Management and Budget. She then joined the U.S. Department of Justice as counsel to the deputy attorney general.[4]

From 2012 to 2014, she was principal deputy counsel in the Office of the Vice President during the Obama-Biden administration. After leaving government service, she worked as a partner at Jenner & Block from 2014 to 2018 and associate general counsel at Facebook from 2018 to 2020.[4]

Hertz worked on the Biden Transition as general counsel.[1]
