Jessica Kean was a 2016 Democratic candidate for District 58 of the Iowa House of Representatives.

Kean's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Education
I believe in:
- Ensuring the stability of universal preschool, which is proven to help kids succeed, especially kids from low-income families. Investing in our kids at 3-4 years old pays dividends for decades.
- Our responsibility to give public schools the funding they need and deserve. If we continue to short-change schools in the state budget, class sizes will rise, there will be cuts in critical programs, and students will be using old technology -- putting them far behind their peers in other parts of the country.
- Making college more affordable. As a thirty-something, I have plenty of peers who are still riddled by mountains of student loan debt, and it's such an injustice that our young people are starting out their lives and their families with such a heavy financial burden on their shoulders.
- Creating innovative new programs to increase job training opportunities at community colleges and through apprenticeship programs - especially in our rural communities. We need to create more opportunities for hands-on learning for our students throughout their educational careers to help young people be better prepared for college and energized about job opportunities in Iowa.
Rural Revitalization
I believe in:
- Bringing in more businesses and high-quality jobs. Part of attracting and keeping good businesses with good jobs -- and helping our kids reach their full potential at home and in our schools – is closing the digital divide. We need to secure better, more stable internet in our rural areas.
- Cleaning up main streets and repairing infrastructure and roads. Parents in rural areas are rightly concerned about the safety of the roads and bridges that take their children to school.
- Helping farmers succeed by adding value to their crops and providing protection against periods of instability.
Economic Inequality
I believe in:
- Raising the minimum wage and making childcare more affordable.
- Closing the gender pay gap and ensuring that women earn equal pay for equal work.
- Creating more high-paying job opportunities and offering more incentives – like help purchasing a first home or farmland – to keep young adults here in Iowa.
- Scaling back tax breaks to big business corporations. Let’s stop it with the corporate welfare and help those who truly need it.
Protecting the Most Vulnerable
I believe in:
- Providing high-quality, affordable care for all Iowans, especially those with disabilities and mental health conditions. We need a much greater investment in mental health care -- a reversal of the current trend in cutting services.
- Increasing health care access for rural Iowans -- we need more rural healthcare workers and quick response times in emergencies.
- Protecting senior citizens from fraud, abuse, and neglect.
- Fixing this Medicaid mess because costs are rising and services are being cut.
The Environment
I believe in:
- Expanding Iowa’s growing renewable energy sector.
- Ensuring clean water for all.
- Encouraging more homes and businesses in Iowa to consider sustainable energy sources like solar and wind, as well as more fuel-efficient vehicles.
- Eliminating toxic chemicals in our environment.
- Creating green spaces and healthy living initiatives, with a special focus on programs that aid low-income families and at-risk youth.
- Promoting locally sourced foods to keep money in our communities, healthy food in our kids, and a cleaner environment for us all.[1]
