Campaign themes

2016

Newville's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]

HUMAN LIFE

I believe every human life (no matter its race, age, stage, ability, gender…) is of great value and should be protected and taken by no one but its Creator.

SAFE COMMUNITY

No one can pursue life, liberty and happiness if they are worried that their safety is at constant risk. Our kids need the freedom to play outside in our yards and in our community parks without fear. We cannot tolerate near daily shootings. We need more opportunities, training and mentoring for our youth so they have more alternatives to joining gangs. We need an increased and proactive police presence along with continued training to specifically meet the needs of our community. We need parents who are keeping a watchful eye on their kids and their kids' friends. We need community!! One of my priorities will be to listen to and advocate for concerned citizens and community leaders by bringing their ideas and suggestions to the legislature.

QUALITY PUBLIC EDUCATION

How can our children be expected to succeed in life if they are not given the tools to pursue success? You've probably heard that education is the great equalizer...this is not true if our schools are under performing and our graduation rates are low. Our current graduation rate is 47% and our achievement gap is one of the widest in the nation! This is unacceptable! Our schools need to be places where both students and staff feel safe. They also need to have high expectations with structured support so that all of our children can pursue excellence. I know there are many teachers and administrators who care about the kids in our classrooms and we need to encourage and thank them. School programs and curriculum need to be regularly evaluated. Our principals, teachers and parents need the freedom to voice their concerns and work as a team to meet the varied needs of all our students.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

We need more jobs within our community. We need businesses both large and small that will hire locally. We need incentives that will encourage these businesses to come to North Minneapolis and to grow in North Minneapolis. We also need more programs that provide real job training so more members of our community are prepared to find a job.[2]
