An effort to recall Councilwoman Jewel Hurtado did not qualify for the ballot in Kingsburg, California.[1] Organizers submitted 423 signatures to the Fresno County clerk in September 2021, but only 310 of those were validated, and 354 signatures were required for a recall election to be scheduled.[2][3]

Recall supporters

The recall notice gave the following grounds for the recall:[1]

Councilperson Hurtado has demonstrated a Marxist/socialist agenda in her activities and actions, which does not represent her constituency. ... Councilperson Hurtado favors rules and regulations that shackle our business community and prevent our city from thriving.[4]

Recall opponents

Hurtado responded to the recall effort on Twitter, saying, "This recall is not being pushed because I do not do my job, but because I stand up and represent equal opportunity and justice for all. My voting record speaks for itself and I am proud of the work I have done to make my community a better place. The work continues."[5]

For a recall election to have been scheduled, organizers needed to collect 354 verified signatures. They submitted 423 signatures to the Fresno County clerk in September 2021. The clerk had 30 business days to verify the signatures.[2]

A recall election was not scheduled after Fresno County Clerk James Kus determined that 310 of the submitted signatures were valid.[3]
