Candidate Connection

Jill Blair participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on August 28, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Jill Blair's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

My top priorities are: fair and stable funding for both K-12 and higher education, simplified access to comprehensive healthcare (particularly for senior citizens), implementation of a fair income tax.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am passionate about education and protecting vulnerable populations like seniors, people with disabilities, and individuals with mental health needs.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Jill Blair answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

My political role models are Eleanor Roosevelt, Jimmy Carter, Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
I would recommend any book by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Her biography of Abraham Lincoln, Team of Rivals, is one of my favorites. I also enjoyed her book about Teddy Roosevelt and William Howard Taft, The Bully Pulpit.[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
I think integrity is the most important characteristic in a representative. Even if we disagree on policies or priorities, I can work with people who come from a place of authenticity and integrity. Accessibility is also very important. Representatives must be engaged in the communities they represent and available to constituents.[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
I am deeply curious and interested in the world around me. I love to learn new things and will study issues that aren't familiar to me. As such, I will seek input from constituents and experts in order to make informed decisions.[3]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Our greatest challenge will be to put partisanship aside in order to address our pension shortfall and mounting debt. This will take concessions on both sides involving budget cuts and revenue enhancements.[3]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
I favor an independent, non-partisan process for redistricting.[3]
