Jill Broadhurst
Jill Broadhurst was a 2014 nonpartisan candidate for the city council of Oakland, California.
Campaign themes
2014
On her campaign website, Broadhurst highlighted the following issues:[1]
Public safety
- Excerpt: "Public safety is our number one priority. Oaklanders deserve safe streets and neighborhoods. City Hall needs to stop politicizing our Police Chief and our police. Our Police Chief should be empowered to lead and define goals which make our city safe, without political interference from city hall. Oakland needs to stop pretending it can solve this crisis alone- we need to partner closely with our County Sheriff and develop a positive working relationship with all law enforcement agencies. We need at least 900 police officers in our community, and, it is through community policing that officers develop relationships with the residents. Neighborhoods contracting with private security patrols is understandable, given city hall’s failure to keep us safe, but it is not a long term answer. Oakland’s future success depends on getting crime under control."
Jobs and employment
- Excerpt: "City Hall needs a long term plan in which niche markets are invited and supported by local government. We can truly capture the “great potential” of Oakland through smart policies which attract businesses here and make our city the smart choice above all others. Business and community must be viewed as partners – through innovative leadership, streamlined processes, and consistent policies, we can create jobs, help schools and build communities. We have an extremely gifted and creative workforce in Oakland- let’s seize this opportunity with true leadership and planning! A simple way to increase city revenue is to treat all businesses, and the jobs they create, as a positive for our city."
Education
- Excerpt: "Great schools are a community effort. We need to partner with OUSD to make sure our children are in school – empty seats do not learn. Ensuring our children read proficiently and understand basic math by early elementary is the first step in providing a sustainable and independent future for all children. Paramount to all of our children’s success, is providing a safe and challenging environment which fosters learning and growth. We need to prioritize attendance and reduce our chronic truancy rates yet remain cognizant that all children be provided resources for an enriched experience. In working with OUSD, our children should graduate high school ready and prepared for their next step into adulthood, whether it be college or the pursuit of a trade and based on the Oakland job pool created through business attraction and initiatives from City Hall."
