Johanson received her B.A. degree from Washington State University in 1981 and her J.D. from Willamette University in 1985.[2]

Johanson was an attorney for 15 years, working as a prosecutor for 11 years. She then worked as a Washington Superior Court judge for the Cowlitz Superior Court from 2002 until her election to the Washington Court of Appeals in 2010.[3][2]
