James "Jim" Carafano is the vice president for foreign and defense policy studies at the Heritage Foundation. Carafano was a member of Donald Trump's presidential transition team, a group of advisors tasked with recommending presidential appointments for the incoming administration.[2]
Career
Carafano earned a B.S. from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He later earned an M.A. and a Ph.D. in history from Georgetown University in addition to an M.S.S. from the U.S. Army War College.[1]
Carafano served in the U.S. Army for 25 years and retired in 2002 as a lieutenant colonel. He served as a senior fellow for the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments as well as the Homeland Security Policy Institute at George Washington University. Carafano joined the Heritage Foundation in 2003 as a senior research fellow in homeland security and missile defense and serves as the organization's vice president for foreign and defense policy studies. In addition, Carafano has taught at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval War College, Mount Saint Mary College, Georgetown University, and the National Defense University.[3]
Carafano is a columnist for several national publications, including USA Today, the Washington Times, and Forbes, as well as a guest analyst for major television networks, such as ABC and PBS. He is also the author of a number of books on technology, foreign affairs, and defense, including Private Sector/Public Wars: Contracting in Combat--Iraq, Afghanistan and Future Conflicts, G.I. Ingenuity: Improvisation, Technology and Winning World War II, and Waltzing Into the Cold War.[3]
Donald Trump presidential transition team, 2016-2017
Carafano was a member of Donald Trump's presidential transition team in his first presidential term. The transition team was a group of around 100 aides, policy experts, government affairs officials, and former government officials who were tasked with vetting, interviewing, and recommending individuals for top cabinet and staff roles in Trump's administration. Carafano was a State Department advisor for the transition team. In his role, he provided guidance on terrorism and border security issues.[2][4][5]
