Louisiana elections use the majority-vote system. All candidates compete in the same primary, and a candidate can win the election outright by receiving more than 50 percent of the vote. If no candidate does, the top two vote recipients from the primary advance to the general election, regardless of their partisan affiliation.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Expanding Healthcare access through Medicare. Requiring corporations to provide a living wage or lose their tax cut. Sensible gun reform.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Teachers, equality, reducing discrimination, upward mobility

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I am very impressed with John Bel Edwards and would like to be able to bring Louisiana forward, as Governor Edwards, through a Federal level focusing on the middle class.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

Longshot

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Ability to avoid the extreme factions of politics while keeping your focus on your platform.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

Ability to negotiate. Willingness to listen to opposing views. Keeping an open mind. Will not accept corporate donations.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

To listen. To have a flexible belief system based on what you hear from the people you represent.

What legacy would you like to leave?

One of incorruptible determination in the face of extreme politics.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

John Lennons' murder.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

Delivering newspapers on my bike. 3 years.

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

Christmas. Love when the family is all together.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

Batman

What process do you favor for redistricting?

Mathematically drawn lines that are equally fair to each party.

What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?

With such a short term you have to get things done and have an open door policy with many town halls to do the job right.

Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?

No. Not in the least.

What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?

Coming together while expelling the white supremacy factor.

If you are not a current representative, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?

Agriculture.

Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?

Yes.

What are your thoughts on term limits?

Not needed. That's what voting is for.

Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

Teachers. Meet with many. And I am amazed what they go through. They are the real hero's.
