Campaign themes
2014
Fredericks' website highlighted the following campaign themes:
Business
“ | It is time to boost our economy and help businesses by reducing the huge tax burden they face. Small businesses particularly lack the ability to grow in a state environment that only looks to add more taxes. When giving blanket approval to the governor’s taxing policies, such as new gas taxes and a rain tax, legislators fail to examine the effects on small and mid-size companies which often need every dollar to exist. Small business is the key to maintaining our economic growth and stability, and I plan to work with local business owners to create the atmosphere needed to help them thrive.[2][3] | ” |
Education
“ | As a high school coach and parent of children who have been educated through the public school system, and attend Maryland colleges, I have a strong understanding of the challenges students, teachers and administrators face. Student success is the primary goal of public education, and educators must have the tools and resources to be successful. Recent changes in the student curricula have been met with confusion and concern, and I plan to review the process with state and local officials to help implement the best system for the education of our children.[4][3] | ” |
Environment
“ | Our Chesapeake Bay is vital to the economy and must be protected. Anne Arundel County is a huge stakeholder in the bay’s health as we have one of the largest areas of water frontage in the nation. A balanced approached must be implemented to help the bay recover, without destroying opportunities for businesses which support the local economy. Oyster reefing is one of the brightest stars for an ailing bay and I will work with organizations to promote this effort throughout our tributaries. The bay, however, is not just the responsibility of the state of Maryland and I will reach out to neighboring states to ensure the effort extends throughout the region. A rain tax will not fix decades of mismanagement of our great natural resource and I will work to repeal this unfair tax and help find alternative ways to fund vital bay projects.[5][3] | ” |
Crime
“ | We are fortunate to live in a relatively safe county, particularly one positioned between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. As a police officer with over 21 years of service to the community, I have a unique perspective on what resources are needed by law enforcement to keep our families, highways, neighborhoods, and businesses safe. Public safety is not just arrests and prosecution, but a larger, collaborative effort between police, medical, prosecutorial and mental health professionals. These service efforts must address the immediate needs of the community, as well as, the long-term goals of safety and mental well-being.
I will work hard to ensure proper laws are in place to enhance prosecution of drunk/drugged driving offenders, protect children from predatory adults, and ensure spouses are protected from domestic violence.[6][3] |
” |
Individual Rights
“ | Legislation should be approached with common sense and reason. Recent Maryland gun legislation further limits access to firearms for law-abiding citizens. I want to stop the assault on citizens' rights to gun ownership, and instead create some of the toughest laws in the country to punish those who commit crimes with weapons. [7][3] | ” |
