Hughes was running in the 2012 election for Illinois State Senate District 34, but he withdrew on December 20.[1] Hughes was to face Dan Lewandowski, Steve Stadelman, Glenn Patterson, and Marla Wilson in the Democratic primary on March 20, 2012. Incumbent Dave Syverson (R) did not run for re-election in District 34; instead, he ran in District 35. The general election took place on November 6, 2012.[2][3]
