Jim Matthews is a judge for the Suffolk County District Court in Suffolk County, New York. He was elected to the court on November 4, 2014, for a term commencing on January 1, 2015, and expiring on December 31, 2020.[1]

Matthews ran for election to the Suffolk County District Court.
Primary: He faced Paul H. Senzer, Walter D. Long, Jr., Patricia Grant Flynn and incumbents Steve Hackeling and Paul Hensley in the primary on September 9, 2014. Matthews cross-filed for the Conservative, Working Families and Independence party lines, winning in each primary. He received 19.1% of the Conservative votes, 17.9% of the Working Families votes and 18.7% of the Independence votes. 
General: He faced Walter D. Long, Jr., Paul H. Senzer, Patricia Grant Flynn, and incumbents Steve Hackeling and Paul Hensley in the general election on November 4, 2014, and won with 18.1 percent of the vote. Candidates competed for three open seats. [1][2] 

Education

Matthews received his undergraduate degree from Cornell University in 1977 and his J.D. degree from the St. John's University School of Law in 1982.[3]

Career

Before he became a judge, Matthews worked as an attorney in private practice. He also previously served as an attorney for the Village of Northport from 2005 until his election to the Suffolk County District Court in 2014 and as a special counsel to the town Zoning Board of Appeals from 2002 to 2014.[3]
