I was born and raised outside of Philadelphia. I am a second-generation United States Marine. The Marine Corps changed my life. I joined in 1973 at age 17 as a high school dropout. While in the Corps I earned my high school diploma and shortly after leaving the service I was received an Associates Degree (1981), Bachelor's Degree (1983), and became a licensed Certified Public Accountant in Pennsylvania (PA) in 1986. In 1984, I began my professional career as an accountant working for the Commonwealth of PA, the PA Democratic Party, and 23 years with The Salvation Army in PA, Florida, Virginia, and back to Florida (FL) where I retired in 2019. While working for The Salvation Army in Broward County, FL, I went back to school 25 years after completing my Bachelor's degree. In 2011, I earned a Masters in Business Administration and a Doctorate of Education in Organizational Leadership in 2019. My doctoral dissertation was on Asian American stereotypes. I have been exposed to local politics since I was five years old, my grandmother was our local Judge of Elections for over 35 years. I have followed Federal and state elections for more than 30 years. As a retiree, I am the current chair of the Ocoee Human Relations Diversity Board and serve on the advisory boards of the Ocoee Police, Fire, and Parks & Recreation Departments. I am also Adjutant, Ocoee American Legion Post 109 and Board Member and Political Director for the Florida Asian American Justice Alliance (FAAJA).
- We are all responsible for conservation because there is a limited supply of all natural resources.
- Water is scarce. All forms of life including humans require water to survive as does our food supply. Merely .4% of the earth's water is potentially usable for human consumption. "Change is Needed" https://worldwaterreserve.com/percentage-of-drinkable-water-on-earth/
- Protect our farmlands and state parks for future generations.
Conservation, inclusion, civil rights, veteran's affairs, and education and learning including books and libraries. My Step-mother was my third grade teacher so I have known her for nearly 60 years. My father and step-mother got married when I was 11 and she went back to school to obtain a Masters degree in Library Science and became the local High School Head Librarian for decades until she retired. We not only have a responsibility to preserve natural resources for the next generation, we must also teach young people a love of learning and give them access to as much knowledge as possible.
The focus on conservation in this office can have a direct impact on future generations.
I admire Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Dr. King, and William Booth (founder of The Salvation Army). They all have one thing in common despite their many differences and that is their focus on helping other people which is what I would like to do if elected to this position.
Political philosophy is merely a subset of a person's philosophy of life. I am a religious Christian, a philosophical Taoist, and what I call a philosophical Baha'i all of which are compatible in my opinion. The "Tao Te Ching" by Laozi or Lao Tzu (Taoism or Daoism) and Bruce Lee, a Taoist has a book entitled "Be Like Water". The Baha'i Faith includes loving all people as does the Holy Bible, specifically the second greatest commandant. In today's complex and fast paced world (checkout the video "We live in Exponential Times") people must love other people (what I believe is the foundation of all major religions) and be flexible and adaptable like the Taoist principle to "Be like Water".
Honesty, integrity, transparency, and hard work.
I love to learn, I love to work, and I love to help others. Furthermore, my brother and I spent years living with my father's parents who lived through the Great Depression and taught us conservation. My grandfather used to take other people's trash (with their permission of course) from the homes being built nearby and make things like toolboxes out of what would have been waste. He also had an unofficial local library because there wasn't one nearby to help others. Furthermore, The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers where I worked for 23 years collects people's unwanted clothes, furniture, and household items (keeping them out of landfills where certain clothes can remain in tact for a 100 years), sell the items at a reasonable price to help people who couldn't afford new, and use the proceeds to pay for a free addiction program - creating a win, win, and winning situation!!
To learn all they can about the conservation needs of Orange County and share that information with other elected officials and the general public.
That I helped future generations have a better life than they may have otherwise had.
The Cuban Missile crisis, I was six. Of course, the assassinations of JFK, MLK, Malcolm X, and RFK also took place in that same decade.
Washing dishes at a local restaurant, that particular job about one year but I worked for the owner at a different restaurant the next year. I made $1.25 per hour and often voluntarily worked without pay. My has a lot changed since the early 70's.
The Holy Bible and the Tao Te Ching, they both help one to take a look at life and oneself.
Superman because he helped so much but was able to also be Clark Kent which to me shows a lot of humility,
"Man in the Mirror", Michael Jackson
Loving to learn, loving people, and loving to help others can be problematic when there are only 24 hours in one day.
I am currently no aware of "any little-known powers or responsibilities held by this office".
No, I do not believe a holder of this particular office needs previous experience in government or politics but it could be helpful.
In my opinion, the most important skills are the ability to learn and adapt and expertise and experience in conservation.
Unfortunately, even though I love a good joke I tend to forget them quickly.
Orange County Democratic Party so far
As previously stated I spent my career as a professional accountant in state government, a political organization, and a well known international church (although many people mistakenly people that The Salvation Army is a social organization), I believe that financial matters, governmental or corporate must be explained in layman's terms so the general public understands what they are investing in. All people in the United States are invested in our government and most major public corporations have investors. A lack of transparency can lead one to question a person's integrity and honesty both of which are of paramount importance to me.
