Jim Schowalter
Jim Schowalter was the Minnesota Commissioner of Management and Budget. Schowalter assumed office on September 2, 2020. Schowalter left office on August 14, 2023.
Governor Tim Walz (D) appointed him on August 12, 2020.[1] He assumed office on September 2, 2020.[2] Gov. Walz reappointed Schowalter in January 2023.[3]
Schowalter previously served as the Minnesota Commissioner of Management and Budget from 2011 to 2014. He was appointed by Governor Mark Dayton (D).[4]
Biography
Schowalter graduated from Macalester College in 1985 with bachelors' degrees in economics and history. In 1988 he graduated with a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.[5][6] Schowalter's career experience includes serving as senior vice president at HealthPartners. He held his first term as Minnesota Commissioner of Management and Budget from 2011 to 2014, with previous department experience as state budget director.[1] Before coming to Minnesota, Schowalter worked as regional economist at the Boston office of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and as budget officer at the U.S. Office of Management and Budget.[7]
