James "Jimmy" Hodson, a candidate for City Council in Winston Salem's Northwest Ward, champions a resolute three-fold mission: to catalyze economic growth and employment opportunities, be the steadfast voice of our citizens, and ensure the protection of people and businesses.

Hailing from Acworth, Georgia, Jimmy's upbringing instilled in him a profound love for country and community. The son and grandson of Air Force veterans and with parents who led the local VFW, Jimmy was inspired to serve his country. His journey led him to the U.S. Army, where he served with distinction in a Lance Missile Battery for four years, bearing witness to the fall of the Berlin Wall during his service in Germany. This military experience exposed him to diverse cultures and reinforced the values of hard work and resilience.

In 1995, Jimmy moved to Winston-Salem, where he met the love of his life in the Northwest Ward. He and his wife, Rebecca, have since raised three daughters and are blessed with six grandchildren, making Winston-Salem their cherished home for three decades.

  • Ensuring Community Safety and Police Partnership Jimmy Hodson’s foremost goal is the safety and security of our Winston-Salem citizens. He will support our police department, collaborating to reduce crime and maintain a secure environment for our families and businesses.
  • Economic Growth through Business Collaboration Jimmy is fervent about fostering economic prosperity. He is dedicated to working hand in hand with both large and small local businesses, aiding them in expanding their operations, safeguarding their interests, and helping them to thrive within Winston-Salem’s vibrant economic landscape.
  • Listening and Responding to Your Needs A hallmark of Jimmy Hodson’s leadership is his unwavering commitment to listening. He values your opinions and concerns and will be an engaged and responsive representative who genuinely hears and addresses your voices. Moreover, Jimmy believes that listening is the soil that grows innovation and ideas that can elevate our city and enhance the quality of life within our community. Your input isn’t just heard; it catalyzes positive change.
My main concern is a safe and healthy community for the good people who call Winston home. We can't expect to attract new economic development to our city if we can't deliver on that promise for our citizens.
The City Council is responsible for adopting and providing for all ordinances, rules and regulations as necessary for the city's general welfare. It approves the city budget and sets property taxes and user fees. The Council appoints the City Manager and City Attorney and approves appointments to City boards and commissions.
Honest, integrity and transparency. Any public office should recognize and respect who they derive their authority from and hold that in the highest regard.
My background in the business world requires working with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds to create solutions. I firmly believe that I can apply this experience to our city's business and the betterment of our community.
A willingness to consider all aspects of an issue and how it impacts the citizens of your ward and the greater city as a whole.
The Challenger disaster was probably the first event I can remember that would be considered historical. We were home from school that day and watched it happen live on TV from our living room.
No. I believe service of regular citizens and not career bureaucrats is the best possible make-up of local government.
Being willing to listen and work with diverse groups of stakeholders who, at times, will hold wildly different needs and concerns. Also, having the fortitude to make hard decisions and stand by those decisions.
Public office holders should be above reproach when it comes to financial transparency as this is the people's money they are working with.

2016

Hodson's website highlighted the following campaign themes:

Putting People First

I believe in a Winston Salem that values and prioritizes the betterment of all who live within our borders. We should never forget who we serve and whose interests we are here to advance and to protect. If we want to be a city of opportunity, prosperity, and security, then we must strive to improve our entire city.

Financial Responsibility

I intend to look closely at development projects that are paid for with taxpayer dollars and which benefit a few companies, their agents, and the developers they partner with, while ignoring the small businesses who actually operate in this community already.

Leading with Integrity

We should honor the faith Winston Salem residents place in their leaders by consistently working to fulfill the promises we make and by implementing policies and building municipal infrastructure that promotes and fosters an environment that is conducive to entrepreneurship, raising safe and happy families, and creating equal opportunities for anyone to be successful, and by limiting the level of involvement that government has in the daily lives of Winston-Salem residents.
