Joan Klein
Joan Dempsey Klein was the presiding judge of Division Three of the Second District Court of Appeal in California. She was appointed by former Governor Jerry Brown and took her oath of office on April 28, 1978. She was retained in the November 5, 2002, and January 6, 2003, elections. She retired at the end of her term on January 5, 2015.[1][2]
Klein passed away on December 24, 2020.[3]
Education
Klein graduated with a B.A. from San Diego State University in 1947. She also graduated with an LL.B. from the University of California - Los Angeles Law School in 1955.[1]
Career
She was the deputy attorney general for California from 1955 to 1963. After this, she was appointed to the Los Angeles Municipal Court and later elected to the Los Angeles Superior Court in 1975. She has traveled around the world as a judge. She was a co-founder and the first president of the National Association of Women Judges, as well as the founding president of the California Women Lawyers. She has given many lectures for various organizations and has served as a member of the California Council on Criminal Justice.[1]
