Yepsen ran unopposed in the September 14 Republican primary. Yepsen was defeated by incumbent Roy McDonald (R) in the general election on November 2.[1] Yepsen ran as a member of the Democratic and Working Families party.

  • Attracting and Keeping an Educated Workforce: "Job development and educational opportunities are key to encouraging families and young adults to stay in this State. I will focus on developing green jobs – both technical and trade, and on building public/private partnerships with State universities and colleges. I will pay special attention to nurturing our tourism and agricultural industries."
  • Civil Rights: "New York has always been at the forefront of the fight for civil liberties. I will continue that tradition and give a voice to those who struggle to be heard....I believe in a woman's right to choose. I will fight to ensure that reproductive health services are accessible to all women in New York. I believe in strict adherence to the Second Amendment of the Constitution and support the responsible use of firearms."
  • Ethics and Reform: "As New Yorkers have learned over the past several years, the New York Legislature is broken. Unethical politicians from both parties have made a mockery of our government. I propose the following policies in order to reform the legislature and put it back in the hands of the people of New York State."
  • Fiscal Responsibility: "New York's fiscal health is in a state of crisis. Late budgets that contain unsustainable spending plans have become the norm, and career politicians are more interested in engaging in backroom deals and power grabs than in submitting on-time, fiscally responsible budgets...I would capitalize on my experience on the County Board of Supervisors by working with my colleagues in the Senate - both Republicans and Democrats - along with my colleagues in the State Assembly in order to build consensus."
  • Job Creation: "Small businesses and are the backbone of a healthy economy. I support developing a three-point plan for small businesses and start-ups: First, I support increasing funding for small businesses through tax incentives that promote venture capital. Second, I would like to leverage our public universities with more public/private partnerships to train the next generation of high tech/green tech workers. Finally, I want to provide incentives to hire people who are out of work by supporting Andrew Cuomo’s Jobs Now Tax Credit program."
  • Property Tax Relief: "I support Andrew Cuomo’s 5-point tax relief plan. This plan includes:
1. Freezing personal and corporate income taxes.
2. Imposing a state spending cap.
3. Imposing a property tax cap of 2 percent.
4. Using budget surpluses for direct tax relief.
5. Encouraging citizen empowerment tax relief by providing more state aid if municipalities consolidate.
I also support aggressive mandate relief and a circuit breaker tax credit to target relief to those families with the greatest need."
