My name is Jodi McConkey and I’m running for the Union County Board of Education District 4 seat. I was a teacher for 14 years, 11 of which were in UCPS, and I currently have a UCPS high school student. My experience working for UCPS was at the school and district level, including representing UCPS in Raleigh. That coupled with my knowledge of education and my vast list of qualifications will no doubt be an asset to our Board. I look forward to the opportunity to win your support. Thanks so much!
  • I was a teacher for 14 years so I have first-hand knowledge of what happens in our schools.
  • I’ve been a UCPS parent for 17 years, so I understand the needs of our families from prek on up.
  • I believe in educating the whole child, which means that the students, staff, parents, and administration must all work together for the good of education.
Education and equality are intertwined and create an important dynamic in a growing child's mind. From the moment our children start school, they learn to share, respect others, deal with adversity, and open their eyes to the world around them. It’s crucial that all of our students have the same opportunities and experiences so that they have an equal chance of success in life. One school’s strengths could help with another school’s weaknesses, and those strengths do not define that school as superior. We are all UCPS, from east to west, north to south.
I was in fifth grade when the Challenger disaster occurred. I remember learning about the significance of there being a teacher on board, and the utter devastation that followed. School was very quiet that next day.
I was a summer camp counselor for three years, with three year olds, 10 year olds, and eight year olds respectively.
The most important responsibility of a School Board member is to always remember who they are creating policies for. Their decisions rarely affect them, but almost always affect the children, their families, the staff, and the community. By creating policies based on their own wants, they are only holding back those that they are responsible for… their students. The School Board must always prioritize education and represent what is best for the entire community as a whole.
Every UCPS stakeholder, no matter their political affiliation.
