Joe Aiello is the director of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Environmental Safety and Quality Assurance.[1] During the period of transition between the Obama and Trump administrations, Aiello was reported to be in consideration for a high-level appointment in the Trump administration. Politico reported that Aiello was being considered for administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.[4]

Environmental career

Joe Aiello had spent the bulk of his career in the environmental sector. Since the 1990s, Aiello has worked as the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Quality Assurance Officer, according to his bio with The NELAC Institute.[3][1] He oversees the state’s Environmental Laboratory Certification Programs. While with the N.J. DEP, Aiello has helped to implement "environmental impact statements for off-shore power plants, for developing the State of New Jersey's surface water quality monitoring and assessment programs, and for planning and coordinating the building of New Jersey's Environmental Testing Laboratory."[3] He also helped found New Jersey’s Environmental Laboratory Advisory Committee.[3]

In the past, Aiello served as a member of the EPA's State Focus Group for Developing a National Accreditation Program. He is a NELAC board member as well as a past first Chair of the NELAC Accrediting Authority Committee.[3] He has served on the NELAC Laboratory Accreditation Body Expert Committee as well as NELAC's Consensus Standard Development Board, Finance Committee, and Conference Planning Committee.[3] NELAC or The NELAC Institute (TNI) is 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, that seeks " to foster the generation of environmental data of known and documented quality through an open, inclusive, and transparent process that is responsive to the needs of the community."[5]

Aiello has worked for environmental consulting firms and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.[1]
