Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated this race as safely Democratic. Incumbent Loretta Sanchez (D) did not seek re-election in 2016. She instead sought election to California's U.S. Senate seat in 2016. Lou Correa (D) defeated Bao Nguyen (D) in the general election on November 8, 2016. Correa and Nguyen defeated Joe Dunn (D), Bob Peterson (R), Louie Contreras (R), Rodolfo Rudy Gaona (R), Lynn Schott (R), and Nancy Trinidad Marin (Independent) in the top-two primary on June 7, 2016.[2][3]

Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Dunn's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Fighting for the Middle Class: There’s something wrong when middle-class families are working harder than ever, but the American Dream keeps getting further away. I think we can do better, much better. My parents taught me at an early age the value of working hard, being responsible with the little money we had, and helping others.
  • Creating Good-Paying Jobs: We strengthen our communities by creating good-paying jobs. I support raising the minimum wage in California to $15 an hour, rewarding entrepreneurs, and helping local businesses grow. We should encourage development of clean energy and make it more affordable and accessible to all of our communities.
  • Making College Affordable for All Students: We need to reform the student loan industry to allow students to refinance their loans at lower interest rates, expand programs that forgive student loan debt in exchange for public service, and provide more affordable opportunities for middle-class families to put their kids on track to earn college degrees.
  • Safeguarding our Secure Retirement: We need to protect Social Security and Medicare for workers who have paid into the system and are counting on the benefits they earned through years of helping support our local economy. We should also increase opportunities for workers to participate in the defined benefit of steady pension growth instead of relying solely on risky investment products that fluctuate wildly with the stock market.
  • Ensuring Equality throughout Our Communities: Throughout my career I have fought for equality for our LGBT communities, to close the gender pay gap, and to stop racial discrimination.
