Noteworthy events
Lucero retired to avoid misconduct proceedings (2013)
The New Mexico Judicial Standards Commission filed formal charges against Lucero on February 20, 2013.[1] The Santa Fe New Mexican said that according to documents filed with the New Mexico Supreme Court, Lucero was accused of calling a potential litigant "sweetheart," retaliating or trying to retaliate against a lawyer who said he would file a complaint against Lucero, and [for] ". . .failing to be patient, dignified and courteous. . ." to the lawyer and the potential litigant. He also allegedly lied to the commission.[1]
The supreme court approved a motion by the commission to allow Lucero to retire permanently from the bench and never serve as a judge again. The court unsealed the commission's records and court documents related to the matter, allowing them to be viewed by the public. Lucero told The Santa Fe New Mexican he had no comment on the matter.[1]
