Joe Perske (Democratic Party) ran in a special election to the Minnesota State Senate to represent District 13. Perske lost in the special general election on November 6, 2018.

Perske was a 2014 Democratic candidate seeking election to the U.S. House to represent the 6th Congressional District of Minnesota.[1] Perske ran uncontested for the Democratic nomination in the primary on August 12, 2014.[2] He was defeated by Tom Emmer (R) in the general election on November 4, 2014.[3]


Background

Perske was a world class marathon runner and worked as a teacher in the Sartell- St. Stephen School District and the Department of Defense Dependent Schools. He was elected to the Sartell City Council in 2005 and became Mayor of Sartell in 2011. Perske also serves on the St. Cloud Regional Human Rights Board, the Executive Board of the Area Planning Organization and on the Greater St. Cloud Development Corporation Board. Perske received his B.A. from St. John's University and his M.A. from St. Cloud University.[4][5][6][7]

A special election for the position of Minnesota State Senate District 13 was called for November 6, 2018. A special primary election was called for August 14, 2018. The filing deadline for this election was June 5, 2018.[8]

The seat became vacant following Michelle Fischbach's (R) resignation on May 25, 2018, to become Minnesota's lieutenant governor.[9]
