I was raised in two places as a child that helped define my core values & beliefs. The first of those places was McKeesport, PA, just outside of Pittsburgh. In western Pennsylvania, I heard about my grandparents generation serving in World War II and working in area steel mills.

My family's collectivism, hard work, and commitment to country and community left a strong impression on me. The other place I lived that influenced my values and beliefs, was the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona. Here I learned about a distinct culture and the value of minority perspectives. More importantly, I learned what it was like to be the minority often times being the only non Indian in my elementary classroom.

From a formal education standpoint, I completed high school in Moorhead, MN and then went on to earn a BA in History and BS in Social Studies Education from Moorhead State University. Since graduation, I have taught social studies at the high school level for 20 years and earned my Masters of History from St. Cloud State University. Over the last 12 years, Monticello has become home, and providing opportunities for my students to become active, engaged young adults has become my passion.

The thing that I am most proud of is my family. I have been married to my wife Tara for the past 21 years. She is a teacher at Buffalo High School. We have two lovely daughters, Sophie is an 8th grader who loves music and politics, and Alemitu a 4th grader who loves math and soccer.
  • I support fully-funded education.
  • I support affordable healthcare for all.
  • I support paid family leave.
I am passionate about:

Fully funded Pre-K and career readiness education.
Job security for caregivers and new parents.
Mental health funding and life-saving treatments.

Expansion of wind, solar, and nuclear power.
The person I look up to the most is my mother. My father died about two months before I was born. From that moment on, my mother altered her life to ensure that my brother and I would have the best life possible. She went back to school earning her PhD in anthropolgy, took a chance and moved us to the Navajo Indian Reservation (formative experience), and ultimately continues to provide a great deal for our family. She continues to persevere and and is not affraid to change/takes risks to this very day. I try my best to follow her example.

Listen to constituents and be actively engaged within the community.
I want to make a difference in as many people's lives as I can (family, friends, community members).
The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien.

O'Brien's book shows the complexity or war. More importantly, it highlights the complexities of life. Plus, it is superbly written.
"Modern Times" by The White Buffalo
No. Of course, experience can be an advantage, however, I believe that fresh views are consistanly needed in order for districts, states, and the county to move forward.
Ensuring that our schools are fully funded. Public schools are the great equalizer in American society. The funding and opportunities that our public schools cannot be replaced. Furthermore, stong public schools are better for the community, the economy, and everyone's overall standard of living.
The legislature should challenge/push the governor to act boldly. The legislature, must present the governor with legislation that is relevant to improving people's standard of living.
Yes. Simply put, our system is designed based on compromise. Without strong, honest relations between legislators, the system become ineffective.
I continually hear about people having to choose between work and caring for a loved one. This is one of the main reasons that I fully support paid family leave.
