Joe Williams (Democratic Party) ran for election to the Oklahoma State Senate to represent District 11. Williams lost in the Democratic primary on June 18, 2024.

Biography

Joe Williams is a former City Councilor from Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was first elected in 1994 and served five terms before deciding not to seek re-election. Williams graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1979 with a Bachelors of Business Administration degree. Williams' career experience includes working for ONEOK and Oklahoma Natural Gas for a combined 36 years.[1]

He has been affiliated with the Tulsa Branch of the NAACP, the Oklahoma State NAACP, the Tulsa Area United Way, the Child Abuse Network, and the Tulsa Area Community Service Council. Williams has also served as co-chair of the City of Tulsa Home Ownership Coalition, board commissioner for the Tulsa Housing Authority, advisory Board member for the Day Center for the Homeless, and member of the North Tulsa Economic Development Initiative (NTEDI).[1]

Regina Goodwin (D) defeated Jennettie Marshall (D), Joe Williams (D), Jonathan Townsend (D), Jeanetta Williams (D), Norris Minor (D), and Robert Lewis (D) in the special election on July 14.[2][3]

The seat was vacant following Kevin Matthews' (D) election to the Oklahoma State Senate.[4]

A special election for the position of Oklahoma House of Representatives District 73 was called for July 14. The special election was originally scheduled for September 8, with a primary election on July 14, but since only one party registered for the primary election, the special general election for this seat was held on July 14.[5] The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was May 6, 2015.[4][5]
