Acuña (Democratic Party) ran for election to the California State Assembly to represent District 36. He lost in the general election on November 5, 2024.

Acuña ran unsuccessfully for the District 80 seat in the California State Assembly in the 1998 and 2002 general elections.[1][2] After he lost the 2002 election, he worked for Assembly Speaker Herb J. Wesson Jr.'s Office of Member Services in Coachella, California.[3] Acuña is a former student of the Coachella Valley Unified School District and is now the father of a student in the district.[4]

Three seats were up for general election on the Coachella Valley Unified School District Board of Education on November 4, 2014. Incumbent Anna Lisa Vargas and challengers Karen C. Hernandez, Blanca Torres Hall, Trinidad Arredondo, Rudy Gutierrez, Alma Delia Silva and Joey Acuña Jr. ran for two seats in Trustee Area 1. Hall and Acuña won the election. Incumbent Meagan Caress ran unopposed and won re-election to Trustee Area 2.
