Johanna is a Golden Valley mom, community volunteer, and school board candidate with deep Twin Cities roots. Raised in Plymouth and a graduate of Armstrong High School, she grew up connected to Hopkins through friends and community events. After living in Chicago for a decade, Johanna and her spouse returned home in 2019, drawn to Hopkins for its strong, diverse schools and welcoming community. Today, their two children attend Meadowbrook Elementary.

Beyond her work as an attorney, Johanna is actively involved in local service and leadership. She provides pro bono support to arts and human rights organizations, serves with Minnesota Women Lawyers to advance equity in her profession, and volunteers on nonprofit boards and parent groups.

Johanna is running for Hopkins School Board to bring her legal expertise, leadership experience, and parent perspective to ensure strong, equitable, and forward-looking schools where every student can thrive.
  • Refocus on Academic Excellence. Johanna will ensure district resources support strong academics and provide teachers with the tools and support they need to provide every student an excellent academic journey and opportunities to perform at the highest level.
  • Enrollment & Retention. 1/3 of students living in the district choose to enroll elsewhere. Johanna will survey these families to understand why. With abundant competitive alternatives, Hopkins must exceed expectations to be the clear choice by strengthening both academic reputation and budget stability.
  • Trust and Transparency. Budgets reflect priorities. Johanna will push for open, student-first spending decisions -- including safe transportation and classroom resources -- while ensuring stakeholders are heard prior to change.
I’m passionate about strengthening Hopkins schools through academic excellence, equity, and student well-being. That means high expectations, strong support for teachers, expanded mental health resources, and reliable transportation. I believe in transparency and accountability, with budgets focused on classrooms, not bureaucracy. Above all, I want Hopkins to be a safe, inclusive place where every child has the opportunity to thrive.
Something that has been a struggle in my life is the constant pressure and criticism that comes with speaking up and standing up for what I believe in. Speaking up has always come naturally to me, but it hasn’t always been easy. At times it has meant being excluded from groups, facing pushback, or being seen as “too much” simply because I am passionate about what I care about. While that can be difficult, I have always chosen to stay true to my values than go along with something I don’t believe in.
The primary job of a school board member is to set the vision, policies, and goals for the district and then, through its governance duties, hold the administration accountable to carry them out with transparency, providing measurable data and results, and responsible budgeting. Board members must communicate openly with stakeholders, listen to families, teachers, and students, and ensure resources are directed to classrooms and student support so every child has the opportunity to succeed.
