John A. Michalek is a former justice of the Erie County Supreme Court in the 8th Judicial District of New York. He was elected to this position in 1995 and was re-elected in 2008 to a 14-year term.[1]

Michalek resigned from the position on June 29, 2016, prior to pleading guilty to charges of accepting bribes and offering a false instrument. The former justice was accused of securing public positions for two relatives of Erie County Democratic Party Chairman Steve Pigeon and assigning an attorney recommended by Pigeon to a case despite the attorney's lack of expertise.[2][3]

Michalek received his B.A. degree from Canisius College in 1973 and his J.D. degree from Albany Law School in 1976.[1] He began his career in 1977 as an Erie County District Attorney. He served in this position through 1985, serving as Police Counsel for the towns of Hamburg and West Seneca from 1981 to 1985 and on the Justice Court Bureau from 1982 to 1985. He then worked as a private practice attorney from 1985 to 1994. In addition, he worked as a Deputy Attorney for the Village of Blasdell from 1986 to 1989. He was also a Deputy Attorney for the Municipality of Hamburg from 1987 to 1989. From 1989 to 1993, he was a Hamburg Town Attorney. He was a School Attorney for St. Francis High School from 1991 to 1994. In 1993, he served briefly as a Hamburg Interim Supervisor. He was elected to the Supreme Court in 1995.[1]
