John Albin
John Albin was the Nebraska Commissioner of Labor. Albin assumed office in 2014. Albin left office on December 20, 2024.
He was appointed acting commissioner by Gov. Dave Heineman (R) in June 2014, and was then appointed commissioner by Gov. Heineman's successor, Gov. Pete Ricketts (R) in January 2015.[1][2] Governor-elect Jim Pillen (R) reappointed Albin on November 14, 2022.[3]
Biography
After completing his legal education, Albin entered into private legal practice. In 1990, he first joined the Nebraska Department of Labor as an administrative law judge. In 1993, he began working in the department's labor division, eventually rising to the position of general counsel in 2000.[4]
Education
Albin earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.[4]

Albin was originally appointed acting commissioner of labor by Gov. Dave Heineman in June 2014, after longtime commissioner Catherine Lang retired. In December of 2014, Governor-elect Pete Ricketts announced that he planned to keep Albin as labor commissioner.[1] Unlike Lang, who simultaneously served as Nebraska's director of economic development and the state's labor commissioner, Albin was only appointed to serve as labor commissioner.[2]
About the office
The Nebraska Commissioner of Labor is a state executive position in the Nebraska state government which oversees the state's department of labor.
The commissioner is tasked with enforcing the state's Employment Security Law, which includes provisions pertaining to employee wages and benefits. The Labor Commissioner is also required to submit an annual report to the governor, in which he or she may make recommendations for amendments to the law.
