Candidate Connection

John Anderson participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on March 28, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and John Anderson's responses follow below.[2]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Pass Federal Balanced Budget Amendment

2) Pass Term Limits Amendment for House and Senate
3) Pass the Fair Tax and eliminate the tax code and IRS[3][4]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Getting Federal spending, and the national debt under control before we spend ourselves into national bankruptcyCite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. John Anderson answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I revere the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence who pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor when they founded this constitutional republic. Many were killed and lost everything due to their revolutionary act.[4]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
Read the Book "The 5000 Year Leap". It describes the 28 principles of America's Founding Fathers that moved America 5000 years ahead and made it the greatest nation in history.[4]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Honesty, a belief in individual freedom, the Constitution, a belief in a Supreme God, Accountability for one's decisions. If you take an oath to uphold the Constitution before God, YOU DO IT.[4]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I am a constitutional conservative and an economic libertarian. I have a 30 point contract I have signed with the voters of my district telling them exactly what I will do in office in advance. I will never vote for a bill I have not read, one that will increase the national debt or violate the Constitution.[4]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Uphold their office of office after being sworn in. Work for WE THE PEOPLE. Ensure the Constitution is enforced. Protect the rights of the American people and shrink the size scope and power of the federal government. Make sure that we have the required military to defend the nation. Make sure the budget is balanced each year. And to act to ensure all laws are enforced. We need to restore the rule of law in this country.[4]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would want to change the way the Washington District of corruption is run. I would want to pass a balanced budget amendment, term limits amendment, line item veto for the President. This would change Washington DC forever. From then on, people would go there for a short time to make tough decisions and then go home to their jobs as the Founding Fathers intended. It would take money out of politics.[4]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
I remember the JFK assassination and I was 12 years old at the time. I want to know what happened on 22 November 1963. I know that one man did not do it alone. If elected to Congress, I would push hard to find out what happened and who did it.[4]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Sorting pop bottles and loading soft drink trucks. I had it for 3 years and it helped me pay for college.[4]
What happened on your most awkward date?
My date told me the most important thing about a man was how much money he made and what he had. It was the last time I saw her.[4]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
The 4th of July is my favorite because we celebrate the birth of our country which I truly love more than my own life. It has given me EVERYTHING. MOSTLY MY FREEDOM.[4]
What is your favorite book? Why?
My favorite book is the 5000 year leap because it fully explains the 28 principles of America's Founding Fathers which made America the place it is today. Which we NEED TO RETURN TO.[4]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
G. W. McLintock in the movie McLintock played by John Wayne.[4]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My autographed photo of General George Patton. Because he probably was the greatest American General of all time as a military battle field commander.[4]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
The Battle Cry of Freedom sung by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.[4]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Constantly being placed in management positions where I was forced to choose between personal advancement and doing the right thing. I always remembered what my mother taught me. Always do the right thing first for others. Its what God expects of each of us. We will all have to answer to that God when we die.[4]
What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?
It is supposed to be the PEOPLE's HOUSE. Not that of the special interests or lobbyists. We need to RESTORE THAT as soon as we can. It is NOT that today.[4]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?
Not any more. We need outsiders. In fact, we need citizen legislators in Washington DC now and we desperately need to GET RID OF CAREER POLITICIANS WHO HAVE WRECKED THE PLACE.[4]
What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?
Runaway federal spending, the national debt are the biggest ones. Restoring the family structure is a huge effort if we want to survive. Getting back to following the Constitution and restoring the rule of law. Fixing our old infrastructure and our electrical power grid. Staying out of foreign wars that we cannot win or afford.[4]
If you are not a current representative, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Yes, I want to be on the budget and appropriations committees that control budgeting spending targets and taxation.[4]
If you are a current representative, why did you join your current committees?
Not applicable[4]
Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?
3 two year terms is what I advocate. I believe in term limits. After the 3 two year terms they need to get out.[4]
What are your thoughts on term limits?
I have proposed a term limits constitutional amendment for Congress and the Senate. It is a major item in my 30 point contract platform.[4]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
I favor allowing each state through its legislative bodies to establish the districts which then must be ratified by their voters every 10 years.[4]
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
Yes I would want to become Speaker of the House or head of the House Budget committee.[4]
Is there a particular representative, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Yes, I would model myself after the great and immortal Senator from Arizona, Barry Goldwater.[4]
Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
Yes, I know an immigrant from Romania who lived under a Communist dictatorship who fights hard for his 2nd amendment rights here in America. People think he is radical but I truly appreciate him because he knows what it is to live under a Communist dictatorship. He see our country going down a dangerous similar path and he fights it with all his might. His wisdom and courage have inspired me.[4]
