  • Advancing Justice and Equity: John Baker is dedicated to advancing racial, social, and economic justice in Kansas. From advocating for fully funded public schools to supporting Medicaid expansion and promoting reproductive rights, John's campaign focuses on ensuring fairness and equality for all Kansans.
  • Protecting Healthcare Access: John Baker is a staunch advocate for healthcare access. He supports Medicaid expansion to provide essential healthcare coverage, opposes legislative actions that infringe upon reproductive rights, and advocates for affordable and accessible childcare to support family well-being and economic stability.
  • Promoting Economic Growth and Social Justice: John Baker champions policies that promote economic growth and address social justice issues. This includes supporting the legalization of marijuana to boost Kansas' economy and address disparities in law enforcement, as well as advocating for affordable childcare to support working families and rural communities.
I'm deeply passionate about advancing racial and economic justice in Kansas. I advocate for fully funding education, expanding Medicaid for healthcare access, defending reproductive rights, and legalizing marijuana for economic growth and social justice. Additionally, I prioritize criminal justice reform and ensuring affordable childcare. These issues reflect my commitment to improving lives and supporting the working class for a stronger, more equitable Kansas.
I am deeply inspired by the legacies of Bernie Sanders and Eugene V. Debs. Bernie Sanders has consistently fought for economic and social justice, advocating for policies that uplift working families, ensure healthcare for all, and address income inequality. His unwavering commitment to progressive values resonates with my vision for a fairer, more equitable Kansas. Similarly, Eugene V. Debs's dedication to labor rights and his fearless advocacy for the working class have profoundly shaped my approach to public service. Debs’s belief in the power of solidarity and collective action continues to inspire my efforts to create meaningful change and represent the voices of those often unheard. Moreover, the legacies of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X profoundly shape my vision and values. Martin Luther King Jr.'s unwavering commitment to civil rights, social justice, and nonviolent resistance serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of fighting for equality and justice for all. His dedication to economic justice and his Poor People's Campaign resonate deeply with my belief in uplifting marginalized communities. Similarly, Malcolm X's fierce advocacy for the rights and dignity of Black Americans and his emphasis on self-determination and empowerment highlight the necessity of addressing systemic racism and fostering true equity. Both leaders, through their distinct yet complementary approaches, remind us of the ongoing struggle for justice and the imperative to challenge oppression in all its forms.

As a state senator, I see my primary responsibility as faithfully representing the voices and aspirations of the people who have entrusted me with their hopes for a better future. My commitment to social justice guides every decision I make, advocating tirelessly for equality and civil rights across our state. I view legislation and policymaking as opportunities to address the urgent needs of our communities by promoting economic opportunity, safeguarding the environment, and enhancing the well-being of every family through thoughtful governance. Ensuring government accountability is crucial; I scrutinize agencies to ensure transparency and efficiency in public service delivery. Community engagement is central to my approach; I actively listen to constituents, ensuring their concerns shape my decisions. I prioritize responsible budgeting to support essential services like education and healthcare while maintaining fiscal discipline. Collaboration with legislators, community leaders, and stakeholders is key to enacting policies that benefit all Kansans. I champion initiatives that improve public health, safety, education, and infrastructure to enhance residents' quality of life. Ethical conduct defines my work; I uphold integrity and avoid conflicts of interest, always prioritizing the public good. My commitment to service drives me to leave a legacy of progress and equity, creating a Kansas where justice, opportunity, and compassion thrive for generations.
I envision leaving a legacy of transformative change and unwavering advocacy. My legacy will be defined by the tangible improvements in the lives of Kansans through policies that ensure equitable access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities. I aim to be remembered as a champion for social justice, someone who stood up against systemic inequalities and worked tirelessly to create a fairer, more inclusive society. My impact will be measured by the progress made in lifting up those who have been historically underserved and by fostering a political environment where the voices of all Kansans are heard and valued. Ultimately, I aspire to leave behind a legacy of compassion, resilience, and a steadfast dedication to making Kansas a better place for future generations.
My first job was cleaning stalls on my grandparent's horse farm. I cleaned stalls, fed horses, and mowed the lawn every summer during elementary school.
"A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn is my favorite book. This seminal work offers a perspective on American history that is often overlooked, focusing on the experiences and struggles of everyday people rather than the actions of elites. Zinn's meticulous research and compelling narrative shine a light on the voices of the marginalized, the oppressed, and the working class, giving them the recognition and respect they deserve.

The book has profoundly influenced my understanding of history and my approach to public service. It underscores the importance of grassroots movements and the power of collective action, reinforcing my commitment to fight for social justice and equity. By highlighting the courage and resilience of those who have fought for their rights and dignity, "A People's History of the United States" serves as a constant reminder of the impact that dedicated individuals can have on shaping a more just society. This book fuels my passion for advocacy and strengthens my resolve to work tirelessly for the people of Kansas.
I have grappled with imposter syndrome, a challenge that stems from my own desire to be a perfectionist and a deep longing to do my best for the benefit of others. This internal struggle often makes me question whether I am truly capable of effecting the change I aspire to achieve. However, it is this very longing to serve and uplift my community that drives me to push through these doubts.

My perfectionism is not merely about meeting high standards for myself; it is rooted in my commitment to ensuring that every policy, every decision, and every action I take is in the best interest of the people I aim to represent. I constantly strive to educate myself, to listen, and to grow, because I know that the stakes are incredibly high for those who depend on strong, compassionate leadership.

Overcoming imposter syndrome has become a part of my journey, reminding me that vulnerability and authenticity are strengths, not weaknesses. It fuels my dedication to work even harder, to be more empathetic, and to remain deeply connected to the needs and aspirations of the people of Kansas. My struggles have made me more resilient and have reinforced my commitment to making a lasting, positive impact on my community.
The governor and the legislature should work collaboratively to address the state's challenges and opportunities. This partnership involves sharing ideas, priorities, and strategies to develop and implement effective policies that benefit all Kansans. While collaboration is crucial, it's also essential to respect the separation of powers outlined in the state constitution. Each branch of government has distinct roles and responsibilities, and cooperation should not compromise the independence and integrity of legislative and executive functions. Transparent and open communication between the governor's office and legislative leaders fosters understanding and consensus-building. Regular dialogue helps bridge differences, align priorities, and facilitate the passage of legislation that serves the public interest. The governor and legislature should serve as checks on each other to ensure accountability and prevent the concentration of power. Oversight mechanisms, such as legislative review of executive actions and appropriations, help maintain balance and uphold democratic principles. In a diverse political landscape, compromise is often necessary to achieve meaningful legislative outcomes. Both sides should be willing to negotiate in good faith, finding common ground while respecting diverse perspectives and priorities.
Promoting sustainable economic growth, especially in rural areas, will be crucial. Diversifying the economy, attracting new industries, and supporting small businesses will be essential to create jobs and increase prosperity.

Improving education outcomes and workforce skills alignment with evolving job market demands are critical. Ensuring all students have access to quality education, including in rural and underserved areas, is vital for future economic competitiveness.

Addressing healthcare access, particularly in rural communities, and ensuring affordable healthcare for all Kansans remain pressing challenges. Medicaid expansion and supporting healthcare infrastructure are crucial for improving health outcomes statewide.

Maintaining and modernizing infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and broadband internet, is essential for economic development, public safety, and enhancing quality of life across the state.

Managing water resources sustainably and supporting agriculture, a cornerstone of Kansas's economy, will require innovative approaches amid challenges like climate change and fluctuating commodity prices.

Addressing poverty, homelessness, and ensuring social services meet the needs of vulnerable populations will require coordinated efforts and adequate funding to support community well-being.

Balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship, including managing water quality, promoting renewable energy, and addressing climate resilience, is crucial for long-term sustainability.
Experience within the political establishment does not guarantee a legislator's commitment to the interests of the working class or the broader community. In fact, entrenched in the corridors of power, one risks becoming disconnected from the realities and struggles of everyday people. True representation arises from a deep understanding of the issues faced by ordinary citizens, gained through direct engagement and empathy, rather than through political careerism.

Moreover, political experience often comes with ties to special interests and compromises that may undermine genuine reform and social justice efforts. The entrenched political class may prioritize maintaining the status quo over enacting bold, progressive policies that uplift the disadvantaged and challenge corporate dominance.

Legislative effectiveness should not be measured by tenure in office or political connections but by a commitment to principled leadership, moral courage, and unwavering dedication to the principles of economic justice and human rights. Fresh perspectives, rooted in grassroots activism and a clear vision for a more equitable society, are often more transformative than insider politics.

Therefore, rather than relying on political pedigree, we should value legislators who bring diverse backgrounds, fresh perspectives, and a genuine commitment to serving the people. It is through such representation that we can truly achieve meaningful change and build a government that works for all, not just the privileged few.
Building relationships with other legislators can be a double-edged sword. While collaboration and consensus-building are essential in advancing legislative agendas, these relationships must never compromise one's principles or dilute the commitment to social justice. Genuine alliances should be based on shared values and a mutual dedication to serving the interests of the working class and marginalized communities.

However, the danger lies in cozying up to political elites or compromising on critical issues in pursuit of bipartisan camaraderie. Too often, legislative compromise has served to maintain the status quo rather than challenge entrenched injustices. The true measure of legislative effectiveness lies not in amicable relationships alone but in the ability to mobilize grassroots support, challenge corporate power, and advocate for transformative policies that benefit the many, not the few.

At its best, collaboration among legislators can amplify the voices of the oppressed and advance progressive reforms. But this must be tempered with a steadfast commitment to uncompromising principles and a clear-eyed recognition of where compromise ends and capitulation begins. Legislators must remain accountable to the people who elected them, not to political alliances that undermine the pursuit of economic and social justice.
Growing up in a household led by my single mother, I learned early the resilience and determination that define the lives of many families striving to make ends meet. Ours was a home where every dollar counted; my mother worked tirelessly, often juggling multiple jobs to ensure we had essentials. Despite financial challenges, she instilled in us the values of hard work, education, and compassion.

Attending public schools, I saw firsthand the disparities in educational resources. Yet, mentors who believed in my potential encouraged my academic pursuits. As a first-generation student, navigating higher education was daunting. Scholarships, part-time jobs, and unwavering community support became my lifeline.

Each personal story shared on the campaign trail echoes my experiences and fuels my commitment to public service. I understand the struggles of families affording healthcare, students striving against odds for education, and workers seeking fair wages. These experiences shape my belief in advocacy and policymaking to improve lives.
My journey from a modest upbringing to seeking office stems from a responsibility to uplift unheard voices. It reflects the transformative impact of community support, educational opportunities, and belief in every individual's potential for a just society.

Reflecting, my upbringing shaped my values and drive. Despite family support, I'm aware many face greater challenges. Stories from my district reveal economic insecurity, inequalities, and daily struggles to provide.

These stories underscore the need for policy reforms prioritizing economic justice, education, healthcare access, and support for working families. They drive my commitment to advocate for marginalized communities, ensuring everyone has opportunities to thrive, regardless of circumstances.
I would approach the question of emergency powers with a deep commitment to democratic principles and the empowerment of the working class. Emergency powers, while sometimes necessary to address crises swiftly, must never undermine the fundamental rights and freedoms of the people.

I believe that the legislature, as the elected representatives of the people, must play a crucial role in overseeing and granting emergency powers. These powers should be granted with strict limitations, clear objectives, and defined timeframes to ensure they are used only when absolutely necessary and proportionate to the crisis at hand.

Transparency and accountability are paramount. The exercise of emergency powers should be subject to rigorous oversight, including regular reviews by the legislature, public scrutiny, and judicial review. This ensures that emergency measures do not infringe upon civil liberties or concentrate too much power in the hands of the executive without democratic checks.

Furthermore, I would argue for mechanisms that involve the active participation of the working class and broader society in decision-making during emergencies. While central leadership may be needed to coordinate responses, the input and consent of the masses are essential to ensure emergency actions reflect the will and interests of the people.
Strengthen worker protections, including workplace safety regulations, anti-discrimination measures, and the right to organize and bargain collectively. This would include measures to protect gig workers and ensure fair treatment in the growing gig economy.
Judiciary Committee: As a lawyer with a background in labor law and criminal law, I am keenly interested in issues related to justice, fairness, and the protection of constitutional rights.

Commerce, Labor, and Economic Development Committee: This committee addresses issues related to economic growth, labor rights, business regulation, and workforce development, all of which are central to fostering a prosperous and equitable Kansas.

Ways and Means Committee: This committee oversees the state budget and fiscal matters, crucial for ensuring responsible spending, prioritizing essential services, and promoting economic stability.

Health and Human Services Committee: Given my advocacy for Medicaid expansion and affordable healthcare, this committee would be pivotal in advancing policies that improve healthcare access and outcomes for Kansans.
I believe that financial transparency and government accountability are essential pillars of democratic governance. Financial transparency ensures that the public has access to information about how taxpayer funds are being utilized. It promotes trust between citizens and their government by allowing for scrutiny and oversight of budgetary decisions, expenditures, and financial practices.

Government accountability, on the other hand, is about holding elected officials and public servants responsible for their actions and decisions. It involves mechanisms such as audits, reporting requirements, and ethical standards that ensure officials act in the best interests of the public they serve. Accountability mechanisms help prevent corruption, misuse of public funds, and ensure that government actions align with the needs and priorities of the community.

In my view, promoting financial transparency and government accountability is not just a matter of good governance but a moral imperative. It strengthens democracy by empowering citizens to participate actively in the democratic process, making informed decisions, and holding their representatives accountable for their stewardship of public resources.
