An effort in Wickliffe, Ohio, to recall Mayor John Barbish was initiated in January 2020. Recall organizers submitted petition signatures in September 2020, but the Wickliffe clerk of council found the signatures invalid due to petitions being filled out incorrectly.[1][2]
Recall supporters
The recall effort was organized by resident Dan Kable in response to the city ending leaf pickup services. Kable also cited Barbish's direction to the Wickliffe Police Department to decriminalize marijuana offenses as a reason for a recall election.[2][3]
Recall opponents
Barbish responded to the recall effort, saying, "We don’t even know if we’ll have a recall election. I don’t think it’s going to come into fruition, and if it does, that’s the reason we’re here today. I’m here to make sure the good people of Wickliffe know and I think a lot of them already do, that I am working hard for the betterment of this city."[2]

In Ohio, any elected municipal official is subject to recall so long as the official has served at least one year in office. Under state law, recall petitioners are required to gather signatures equal to at least 15% of the total votes cast in the last regular municipal election within 90 days.
Recall organizers were required to submit 850 valid signatures to put the recall election on the ballot. There were 938 signatures submitted on September 29, 2020, with 64 signatures being found invalid.[2] On October 8, 2020, Wickliffe Clerk of Council Sandra Fink found the remaining signatures invalid due to noncompliance with the petition process.[1]
