My name is John K. Buthorn and I am Born & Raised in Staten Island, graduating from St. Ann's Catholic grammar school and New Dorp HS. I attended John Jay College where I obtained both a Bachelors degree and Masters Degree. I am very proud to have served our great country as a United States Marine during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF). I am a retired sergeant with the New York Police Department (NYPD) who has served in various positions throughout my career, from investigative ranks to public relations to supervisory positions. After my NYPD career, I went back to college to attain a Master’s degree in Social Work and currently am a Licensed Master Social Worker serving as a psychotherapist.
  • Public Safety - A community is nothing without Safety. I am committed to Public Safety by supporting the NYPD through City Council funding to ensure they have adequate funding for specialized training, monies for recruitment, and adequate pay rates to retain officers from leaving for other Departments.
  • Education - Our children need programs centered on the basis of reading, writing, and Math. they also need to have supplemented programs for the challenges and opportunities of our time in STEM, vocational careers, and the Arts. Additionally, schools need to be safe and have opportunities for children to remain after school for additional activities or programs centered don advanced learning
  • Emotional Health - As a licensed social worker, I am committed to the challenges our communities face in lack of resources for mental health in regards to substance use counseling, community resources that allow children in school to receive counseling, and resources that allow mobile response teams to respond to immediate concerns of those at risk to harm themselves or others.
Public Safety, Education, Emotional Health, and Small Businesses. These 4 tenets of a community are foundational to quality of life for all constituents and will be the focus of my platform
I dont necessarily look up to celebrities or those in the public light. I look up to family, parents and siblings, because I see how our struggles in life are handled with the core values instilled in us by parents and my Aunt growing up.
I read a lot of books on Presidents and there is none specific but noting the courage that many have taken against all odds and being able to be a part of attaining change due to their persistence.
Integrity - doing whats right as it relates to personal and professional values and ethics

Courage - The ability to take action to fight for your constituents regardless of the outcome in has personally or politically for the candidate
Honesty, Integrity - always looking to serve the greater good and with purpose, as opposed to looking to attain happiness
Working and Fighting for the Constituents of your district in the collective values and principles of those stakeholders
That I was a leader, a fighter, a protector, a good father and husband and someone other people can say that it doesn't take much to change the world but just being involved in service to others
My time during grammar school and being involved in sports, basketball and baseball. I always loved sports and playing as a child in my neighborhood with all kids throughout the day and nights
Working at a Trophy Store- I worked there about 3-4 years during High School
David and Goliath (Malcolm Gladwell) - This book details and accounts for people who have overcame odds due to limitations they believed or society believes they have. Nothing is a limitation and everything is a strength that we can use to be successful and have purpose
Biggie Smalls (Notorious BIG) - all songs related to him. Grew up with him as my favorite and still look to listen to his songs on the radio
for a time it was my time, working as a Police officer I struggled seeing my kids and family. Since retirement this hasn't been an issue anymore and I enjoy having more roles in being there for them at their sports and events.
Dad jokes - nothing specific
I believe in financial conservatism. I am a believer in government and responsibilities they have for our safety and freedom but I believe in keeping them in check and allowing the States to be the primary executors of their responsibilities as outlined in the Constitution
