After growing up in Durham and Cary, John first arrived in Raleigh in 1997 to attend NC State. He graduated in 2001 with a degree in marketing and moved to New York City where his life was forever changed after surviving the attack on the World Trade Center. For his acts of heroism and service, John received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Governor Mike Easley in the halftime ceremony of that season’s NC State vs. UNC football game.

Having experienced first-hand the perseverance of humanity, John found new passion in a commitment to relationships, community, and a future of resilience.

John returned to Raleigh in 2011 and currently lives in District E with his loving wife, Melissa, and their daughter.

John earned his MBA from UNC with coursework in urban planning, helped found the public/private partnership, Skate Raleigh, bringing a skatepark to downtown Raleigh, and is a change management consultant working with organizations to improve alignment and productivity during times of change.
  • Having lived in Raleigh on and off since my freshman year at NC State in 1997 and in the Triangle since 1987, I have seen Raleigh change significantly and the changes are sure to continue. Rapid growth brings exciting opportunities, but also challenges like affordable housing and maintaining unique character. I aim to address the following areas:

    1. The built environment and infrastructure:

We need to ensure Raleigh grows in a way that balances urban density with the preservation of our beautiful green spaces. This means focusing on smart growth strategies, such as transit-oriented development and mixed-use projects, to create vibrant, walkable neighborhoods.
  • Public Safety: Ensuring our community is safe is not only a matter of protecting our residents but also fostering an environment where everyone feels secure and supported, which is essential for the city's continued growth and prosperity.
  • Public Spaces for community connection: Enhancing our public spaces, such as parks and greenways, is essential for fostering a sense of community and improving our quality of life. I will advocate for the preservation and expansion of these spaces, ensuring they are accessible and well-maintained. By doing so, I aim to create environments where residents can come together, share experiences, and participate actively in community life.

Preserving and investing in parks, greenways, and open spaces
I have called the Triangle home since 1986 growing up in Durham, moving to Cary in high school and attending NC State in 1997. I served as a volunteer for the Raleigh Rescue Mission and Communities in Schools, leveraging my French minor to teach students from the Congo and Haiti in math. For nearly 40 years I have seen our area evolve and fostered relationships with varied members of our community from all backgrounds and interests. This intimate familiarity of our area provides me with context to know what has happened and why, which will aid in my ability to weigh issues with a deep perspective of our citizens in mind.

I have long held the value statement that "we are most fulfilled when we serve others" due to my receiving the highest civilian honor in North Carolina, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. This led me to pursue my MBA with a focus in learning how cities grow responsibly, investing in public open spaces with the public/private partnership Skate Raleigh, and professional guiding organizations on ethical influence and change management.

I believe these capabilities will be relevant to our growing and ever evolving city.
