Three of the five seats on the School District of Manatee County school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. Four newcomers ran for the District 1 seat in the primary election on August 30, 2016: Xtavia Bailey, Gina Messenger, Linda Schaich, and Edward Viltz. Viltz and Messenger received the highest number of votes in the primary, allowing them to advance to the general. Messenger won the general election.
