John P. Colangelo is a judge of the New York Supreme Court 9th Judicial District. He was elected on November 5, 2013.[1] He served as a part-time judge of the Westchester County Court from 2003 through 2009, and a full time judge from 2010 to 2013.[2] On November 1, 2019, Gov. Andrew Cuomo appointed Colangelo to the Appellate Division-Third Department.[3] Colangelo left the Appellate Division on June 20, 2022 and returned to the trial court.[4]

2013 election

Colangelo ran for election to the New York Supreme Court 9th Judicial District. General: He was elected in the general election on November 5, 2013, with 11.1 percent of the vote. The candidates below were also on the ballot, competing for five open seats.

IJEQC rating

Colangelo was rated "Qualified" by New York's Independent Judicial Election Qualification Commissions (IJEQC).[7]

Education

Colangelo received his A.B. degree from Brown University in 1974 and his J.D. degree from the New York University School of Law in 1977.[2]

Career

Colangelo began his career in 1977 as an associate of the law firm of Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays & Handler. In 1987, he joined the firm of Fabricant, Yeskoo & Colangelo, P.C. He then served briefly with Wilner & Associates, P.C. in 1994 before becoming a sole practitioner (the Law Offices of John P. Colangelo) in 1995. He then worked as a partner of Colangelo & Goldenberg, LLP from 1997 until his judicial appointment in 2002.

Colangelo's judicial career began in 2002 when he was appointed to the New Rochelle City Court. He served in that capacity until 2009. He also served as a part-time Westchester County Court Judge from 2003 to 2009. He was then elected to a full-time position on the County Court and took office in 2010.[2]
