John Cox is the former Wyoming Director of Workforce Services. He was appointed to the position on September 8, 2015, by Governor Matt Mead (R) to replace interim director Delbert McOmie.[1] He began serving in October 2015.[2] On February 14, 2019, Governor Mark Gordon (R) announced Cox would be replaced by Robin Sessions Cooley.[3]

Prior to his appointment as director of Wyoming Workforce Services, Cox served as the director of the Wyoming Department of Transportation from 2005-2015. Before that, Cox served in law enforcement for nearly 30 years. His career in law enforcement began in Chadron, Nebraska in 1976. After moving to Wyoming in 1978, he became a patrol supervisor in Douglas, Wyoming and chief of police in Powell, Wyoming. From 1998-2006 he served as the colonel and administrator of the Wyoming Highway Patrol.[2]

In addition to his duties in state government, Cox's career experience includes being an instructor at the Pointman Leadership Institute.[2]

Education

Cox graduated from the FBI National Academy as well as the law enforcement academies in Wyoming and Nebraska.

Political career

Director of Wyoming Workforce Services (2015-2019)

Gov. Mead appointed Cox director of workforce services on September 8, 2015, as part of a larger cabinet reorganization. Former interim director Delbert McOmie was appointed director of the School Facilities Department, and Bill Panos replaced Cox on an interim basis at the Department of Transportation.[1] He left the position in 2019.[3]
